Securing equal rights through food and drink
A local subcommittee called Eat, Drink and the Freedom to Marry has been formed by the No on 8 Campaign to solicit restaurants and bars to help battle Proposition 8, the November California ballot initiative that would ban same-sex marriage. The committee is putting out the call to such establishments countywide, asking them to donate any percentage of profits they earn from sales on Sept. 18, a date that will be promoted by the committee. Flat donations are being accepted as well.
“Our goal is to get about 100 bars and restaurants on board,” said Jeff Redondo, a committee member who helped launch the effort. “We have about 20 businesses already involved.” The list of participants can be found at www.myspace.com/eatdrinkfreedom2marry.
Businesses wishing to take part should call 619-450-6980, or e-mail sandiegoedm@hotmail.com or dereksd80@hotmail.com.
Canines and winos
Wine Steals in Point Loma and Hillcrest recently introduced “dog day afternoons” on their patios every Sunday. Patrons are encouraged to tote along their pooches while taking advantage of half-price pizza wraps and bottomless carafes of mimosas for $15. Various cosponsors will be on hand each week to pass out doggie treats. Doggie hours are from 2-5 p.m., at Point Loma, and 1-4 p.m. at Hillcrest. 2495 Truxton Road, 619-758-1725 and 1243 University Ave., 619-295-1188
French Sensibility in Point Loma
Roseville is the latest installment from restaurateur George Riffle, previously of Quarter Kitchen, Blanca and others. Chef Amy DiBiase serves up a dinner menu reflecting seasonal French-Mediterranean fare that includes duck confit, braised pork cheeks, lamb rib eye and more in an upscale, yet non-pretentious brasserie-style atmosphere. Now open daily for dinner starting at 5:30 p.m.; 1125 Rosecrans St., 619-450-6800
And speaking of brasseries …
Currant American Brasserie, located in Downtown’s chic Sofia Hotel, has appointed Geoffrey Yahn as its new executive chef. Yahn has created new lunch and dinner menus for the restaurant that offer both a “playful” and classic approach to French bistro faves such as fennel-brined pork chops, homemade saffron pasta and truffle-artichoke ravioli. 140 W. Broadway, 619-702-6309
Eye on Mission Hills
Restaurateurs Philippe Beltran and Jacqueline Delaney of Blue Boheme are bringing to Mission Hills later this year Papa Nanou, a globally inspired restaurant built fresh that will resemble a modern-day warehouse. According to Beltran, “The design will be phenomenal. There’ll be a large outside patio and different dining sections, each featuring different colors and fabrics. It’ll be a high-energy look mixing old and new world elements together.” 4020 Goldfinch St.
