North Park happenings
Contrary to rumors, it doesn’t appear as though the Commonwealth Café on 30th Street in North Park is reopening anytime soon, supposedly under the name Phoenix Cafe. A recent snoop through the windows revealed a dusty, ghostly interior seemingly abandoned in mid-operation earlier this year. There are no notices posted, nor any hints of construction taking place.
Mosiac Wine Bar on the same block, however, is slowly shaping up with eye-catching signage and a modern wood façade. Construction on the former warehouse broke ground in early summer under an initial plan of opening in November. With the economy understandably slowing up new projects, winos will have to wait a couple more months before getting their fix here.
Flavors for thought
The company known for its commercial line of seasonings announces each year the McCormick Flavor Forecast, which cites top flavor pairings conceived by chefs, cookbook authors, television food personalities and trend setters. Looking ahead to the new year, palatable marriages have been struck between: toasted sesame and root beer; dill and avocado oil; rosemary and fruit preserves; cayenne pepper and tart cherry; mint and quinoa; and smoked paprika and agave nectar. Chefs take note. Amateur home cooks approach with caution.
Get your carbs at ‘The Shack’
Not everyone believes that carbs are evil. Now in its 25th year of operation, The Potato Shack in Encinitas continues roping in customers for all-you-can-eat “American fries” included with most breakfasts. The “fries” are actually cubed red potatoes that are boiled and then grilled in canola oil before taking on a choice of 20 different toppings. Numerous other potato preparations fill the menu as well, along with mondo-size pancakes that flop over their plates, French toast made with double-cut bread and puffy omelets using at least three eggs. A homey atmosphere boasting Hang 10 surf posters and patriotic memorabilia set the stage for these hardy carb fests. For more information, visit www.gaylesbiantimes.com/links/1094.
National spotlight shines on San Diego
San Diego’s “playful” culinary scene takes center stage in a piece titled “Food Across America,” published in the December issue of Food & Wine Magazine. Mentions are given to Eclipse Chocolat in University Heights, Whisknladle in La Jolla, Wolfgang Puck’s new spot, Jai, at UCSD and others.
Lobster Frenzy
The Marine Room in La Jolla heralds in the lobster season with three-course meals every Monday evening at $40 per person (or $55 with wine pairings). The main entrée includes a choice of Pacific lobster prepared in three different preparations – nectarine glazed, butter basted or fennel pollen spiced. Reservations are recommended.
