Elevations
The Park Manor Suites in Hillcrest opens its seventh-floor Top of the Park lounge for dinner on the last Monday of every month, beginning Jan. 26. Chef Tony Wilhelm will take an “Iron Chef” approach by incorporating a particular seasonal ingredient into each monthly menu. Live music will also be presented. 525 Spruce St., 619-296-0057. Other choice picks for rooftop dining around town include The Glass Door in Little Italy, Bertrand at Mr. A’s in Hillcrest, Clay’s La Jolla and the Sky Room, both of which feature striking views of La Jolla Cove.
Innovative sandwich shop to open in Hillcrest
The modernly-styled sandwich chain Which Wich makes its California debut on Fifth Avenue in Hillcrest next month. Customers choose from 10 different categories that include “beef,” “comfort,” “Italian” and “vegetarian” before marking up menus printed on brown paper bags to specify their choice of cheese, spices, condiments, etc. All of the sandwiches are served hot on a choice of three breads, including a low-carb option. A second shop in Pacific Beach is due to open in a couple of months. 3825 Fifth Ave., and 1001 Garnet Ave.
Ownership switch at The Better Half
Chef John Robert Kennedy recently purchased The Better Half from Zubin Desai, who will stay on as general manager. Kennedy says that he will keep the original concept in place, selling wines only by the half bottle while maintaining a lively seasonal menu that he implemented when the Hillcrest restaurant first opened just over a year ago. A few changes will eventually be made to the dining room, however, to “soften it up with draperies and carpeting.” And for now, the restaurant’s Sunday brunch is discontinued until spring. 127 University Ave., 619-543-9340.
Wing Ding
Chicken wings that come in nearly a dozen different flavors can be found at Wing Stop in the Loma Square Shopping Center in Loma Portal. The Texas-based franchise, which claims to have recently served its “billionth wing,” has taken part in the Buffalo Wing Festival for the past three years. Wing Stop’s menu also includes boneless wing strips and homemade side dishes such as bourbon baked beans and pearl potato salad. 3365-B Rosecrans St., 619-523-9464.
Oodles of Noodles
A new mom-and-pop restaurant called Pastalini will open next month in University City, serving fresh, organic pasta dishes. Customers point and choose their preferred type of pasta, sauce and meats. The atmosphere promises to be hip and casual, with an exhibition kitchen and a wait staff dressed in Italian soccer uniforms to reflect the owners’ love of the sport. 4079 Governor Drive, #209, 858-926-8728.
