Hillcrest exit
After serving as a 22-year-old landmark in Hillcrest, the Corvette Diner will close its doors on April 26, in preparation for a move to Point Loma’s Liberty Station. The eatery, owned by restaurant moguls David and Leslie Cohn, reopens at the new location this summer under the name Corvette Diner and Gamers’ Garage. The expanded venture will feature increased seating capacity, a 5,000-square-foot arcade, three differently themed dining areas and a full cocktail bar for adults. As for the parking crunch we all came to know at the Hillcrest address, the Liberty Station site offers an ample adjacent lot at no charge. 2965 Historic Decatur, www.dinecrg.com.
Sweet rewards
Nearly 1,000 “dessert pieces” will be donated by a dozen local restaurants for a San Diego Pride volunteer appreciation party, scheduled at 6 p.m., April 22, at the Top of the Park. The event recognizes the 650 volunteers who assisted Pride in 2008. Donating restaurants include Hash House a Go Go, The Mission, San Diego Bakery, Cupcakes Squared, Elizabethan Desserts, Indulgence and more. Volunteers are entitled to bring a guest at $5 per person. The event coincides with National Volunteer week. To sign up as a volunteer for this year’s Pride season, call 619-297-7983, ext. 111, or visit the Web site at www.SanDiegoPride.org.
Foxy digs
The upscale and contemporary Fox Sports Grill has opened in the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, a jumbo and welcoming space replete with 26 plasma and LCD screens, plus oversized booths and a large patio with bayside views. The menu takes a gourmet approach to American classics, featuring Hawaiian poke, filet mignon chili, pulled pork sliders, jambalaya and four-layer chocolate cake. Customers will also discover an expansive wine and cocktail list. The grill is open seven days a week. 1 Park Blvd., 619-231-9000.
Ride ’em cowboy
Bravo’s popular “Top Chef” contestant Frank Terzoli (aka Frankie the Bull) has opened a Texas-Louisiana-style restaurant in the Morena District called Frankie the Bull’s BBQ. Terzoli uses a smoker filled with applewood and mesquite for cranking out ribs, beef brisket, pulled pork and shrimp po’boys. A Western theme pervades, with cowboy hats for the employees and soon to come, bull horns that serve as mugs for microbrews on draft. 1127 W. Morena Blvd., 619-276-2855.
Beer and cheese
Two classes that focus on the marriage of beer and cheese will be held at 7 p.m., April 22, at Taste Artisan Cheese & Gourmet Shop in Hillcrest, and at 6:30 p.m., April 26, at O’Brien’s Pub in Kearny Mesa. The cost is $40 per class. For reservations, call 619-683-2306.
