Passport to Spain
The culinary riches of Spain are only a marinated eel’s throw away at Pata Negra, a quaint three-aisle grocery store in Pacific Beach owned by Javier Gonzalez of Costa Brava restaurant next door. Nearly everything is imported from the Mother Country: Serrano ham on the bone; meaty olives; traditional bean and sausage soup called fabada asturiana; and garrotxa goats milk cheese boasting a hazelnut essence. Want to try your hands at making classic paella? The shelves also carry Bomba rice, the requisite grain for making the dish. And should you need a wine to pair with those canned eels in olive oil, simply head to the back of the shop and behold dozens of hard-to-find Spanish labels. 1657 Garnet Ave., 858-274-7282.
Meatloaf, shakes and pinball
The Covette Diner is back in operation since bailing out of Hillcrest and relocating to a much larger space in Point Loma’s Liberty Station. More colorful than ever, the revised venture has been renamed Corvette Diner and Gamer’s Garage, featuring 5,500 square feet devoted to brightly lit arcade games. At the opposite end are 1950-style dining areas that can accommodate up to 300 guests who come knocking for burgers, fries, meatloaf and other American diner fare. Sassy, bubblegum-tossing waitresses in bouffant hairdos remain in place amid a nonstop play list of rock-and-roll tunes. In addition, adults are afforded a full cocktail bar and party planners have access to a private dining room designed by none other than the Corvette Owners Club of San Diego. 2965 Historic Decatur, 619-542-1476.

Frogs legs for seven bucks
The popular Avenue 5 Restaurant & Bar in Bankers Hill has introduced a new value-driven “Tuesday Tastings” menu, keeping appetizer prices under $10, including seven-dollar frogs legs in lemon cream, and seasonal entrees below $20. H2O Cafe
Numero Water Boutique is a new boutique and café in Little Italy that focuses on bottled waters culled from different areas around Japan’s Mount Fuji. The Zen-like space greets visitors with a tranquil design of natural elements that flow into a traditional shoes-off tea room replete with tatami mats. The bottled water is sold in three types designated by numbers. The softest is 29, ideal for cooking or brewing teas. Number 51 is high in bicarbonate ions, helping to restore the body’s Ph balance. And 76 supposedly helps restore brittle hair, skin and nails because it’s high in metasilicic acid, which acts as a precursor to collagen. The waters sell for $1.79 (16.9 ounces) and $3.75 (30.4 ounces). Tea sets, sandals and purses made from kimono fabric are also available. 1660 India St., 619-236-8369.
