Potluck for a good cause

The outdoor, public event will be held at 11 a.m., Sept. 7, at World Beat Center in Balboa Park. Picnickers are asked to bring a simple homemade dish to share, plus a plate, silverware and cup, as they exchange ideas and learn more about the current lobbying attempts. 2100 Park Blvd., slowfoodurbansandiego.pingg.com.

The chic, 7,000-square-foot restaurant, wine bar and retro café that is GIO, was recently named California Small Business of the Year for the 36th Senate District. The sprawling $2 million operation received top honors, along with other small businesses from 75 different legislative districts. In addition, GIO has introduced “Sunday Flight Night,” featuring a variety of reserve-list labels. The flights range from $16 to $20, along with flatbread pizzas for $8 a pie. 8384 La Mesa Blvd., 619-462-9100.
Dietary guidelines upfront
Hundreds of popular food products from companies such as Kellogg’s, Kraft and Pepsico have recently begun adopting the Smart Choices Program, which provides consumers with front-of-pack nutritional labeling. The labels are distinguished by a green check mark, allowing shoppers to more quickly assess products that meet specific nutritional criteria based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and other food-science agencies.

The three-course meals, prepared by W Hotel chefs, cost $99 per person, not including tax and drinks. Reservations are required. 421 W. B St., 800-710-1270.
