Maintaining a long-lasting glow without sun damage
Published Thursday, 27-Aug-2009 in issue 1131
Skin cancer and other health risks associated with sunbathing and tanning beds are motivating those in search of a sunny glow to try spray tanning.
When correctly applied, preferably via a personalized airbrush application by a technician, spray tanning is safer and avoids that orange tint many associate with sunless tanning products.
Personalized spray applications are generally found in tanning salons, day spas and beauty salons, and are available via mobile service in the comfort of the home or office. When used properly by a professionally trained technician, spray applications can give the client a flawless look. The process takes approximately two to five minutes and the effects usually last up to 10 days.
Not only is spray tanning safer, but it also avoids that orange tint many associate with sunless tanning products.
Although personalized spray tanning applications are generally safe and have flawless results, the airbrush tanning industry is generally unregulated and services are primarily offered in tanning salons and by mobile tanners who are not necessarily licensed. So it’s important to find a technician with experience and who has completed a hands-on training course. Also ask what ingredients are in the solutions used. Products should be aloe-based, and extra hydration is important. Other ingredients to look for are vitamins, hyaluronic acid, tyrosine, CoQ10 and essential oils rather than a chemical fragrance.
To keep your artificial tan looking great for as long as possible, exfoliate your skin prior to treatment. Use a water-based exfoliant or loofah, as an oil-based one can create a barrier and prevent the tanning solution from developing. After the treatment, make sure you take ample time to dry off thoroughly with a cool, not a hot, fan, and avoid blow drying, as heat may cause sweating and evaporation of the solution, which takes between six and eight hours to develop on your skin. During this time, you’ll need to wear loose clothing and flip flops to avoid streaking.
After your tan has set, moisturize twice a day with a high quality cream, avoid hot showers and exfoliating products, and use a spray or lotion tan extender when you shave, have a facial and/or after swimming. Such products should be used sparingly, however, as they may turn your skin orange. And note that they do not contain sun protection ingredients, so you’ll also need to apply UVB protection.
Eighty percent of dermatologists surveyed in a 2006 study by the American Medical Association believe that UV tanning is unsafe in both natural and artificial forms. Spray tanning is a safe alternative to getting that healthy glow we all want.
