A changing universe
Dish restaurant and adjoining Ciro’s pizzeria at Universal Hillcrest will stay dark until spring, according to Manager Billy Nordmeier, who revealed that both properties are slated for “reinvention.” The eateries will undergo remodeling and menu changes, reopening most likely under new names. Nordmeier adds that full-service dining will remain at Dish’s address, while the space that was Ciro’s will still offer pizza, but with more diversified food options added to the mix.
Pass the croque
Caffe Carpe Diem in Bankers Hill last week adopted a full breakfast and lunch menu that mirrors the one offered at its North Park location on University Avenue. Favorites include the carpe omelet stuffed with Turkish sausage and Romanian cheese, plus colorful salads, herb-laden tabbouleh, savory paninis and a knockout croque-monsieur (a.k.a., Mister Crunchy) made with three cheeses and Black Forest ham. Owner Sema Gurer says she will soon add additional seating and roll out a line of Italian desserts. Food is served from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., daily. Coffee and pastries are available from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. 3401 First Ave., 619-297-9020.

Octopus at Los Arcos in Chula Vista
A prix-fixe dinner incorporating cocoa from start to finish is on tap this Saturday, Nov. 14, at Eclipse Chocolat in North Park. Three seatings will be available, at 4:30, 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. The bill of fare includes butternut squash ravioli or Cornish game hen with cocoa gravy, cocoa butter “smashed” potatoes, cheesecake with dark chocolate crumb crust and fried mac and cheese as an optional starter. The dinner costs $30; or $45 with wine pairings. Next on the agenda: a Southern-fried Christmas dinner laced also with chocolate, scheduled for Dec. 12. Reservations required. 2121 El Cajon Blvd., 619-578-2984.
Seafood adventures
Lauded for its numerous seafood preparations, Los Arcos in Chula Vista represents the first U.S. location of the family-run chain, which currently operates 16 kitchens throughout Mexico. The menu has expanded to include more than 20 different styles of fresh fish, along with hot sellers such as octopus, calamari and creatively prepared shrimp. The authentic culinary experience is augmented with live entertainment beginning at 6:30 p.m., Thursdays through Saturdays. 89 Bonita Road, Chula Vista, 619-934-4063.
Comfort on the coast
Urban Solace in North Park is branching out with a yet-to-be-named second restaurant in Encinitas that will feature two levels replete with ocean views, lounge entertainment, three patios and a “living wall” of greenery. Due to open in spring, the menu will stick to its famous format of comfort cuisine. 25 East E St., Encinitas.
