Product: Chocolate Cherrios
Description: General Mills’ latest version of Cherrios cereal coated lightly with chocolate flavoring and cocoa.
Preparation summary: Eat plain or with milk
High points: Contains about 20 percent less sugar than other chocolate cereals, thus protecting the integrity of the whole grains and oats.
Low points: If you’re looking for a chocolate fix, this isn’t it. The so-called “real” cocoa in the cereal falls short of triggering endorphins.
Average Retail Price: $3.99
Availability: Major grocery stores
Product: Trader Joe’s Roast Beef Hash
Description: A relative newcomer to the shelves, the fully cooked hash is contained in a 12-ounce heavy foil pouch with cubed potatoes and finely diced onions. Salt, sugar and bay leaf are also listed in the ingredients.
Preparation summary: Add a tablespoon of oil into a skillet and fry until brown. Or place pouch in boiling water for five minutes.
High points: Exceeds restaurant quality and matches good, homemade recipes in terms of flavor and texture. The meat is rich and soft and the potatoes firm, yet tender. Go ahead, live dangerously. Top it with an over-easy egg.
Low points: There is no denying that it looks like dog food.
Average Retail Price: $2.49
Availability: Trader Joe’s
Product: Spicy Thai Chili Tuna Medley
Description: Part of Bumble Bee’s new line of seasoned tunas called Sensations, which come in five-ounce cans and peel-off tops.
Preparation summary: Ready to eat.
High points: Juicy, lean and blasting hot.
Low points: Stay away if you’re on a bland diet. And even if not, beware of the whole red chili pepper perched atop the tuna. It’s an H-bomb. Product is somewhat expensive for its size.
Average Retail Price: $3.49
Availability: Major grocery stores
Product: All Natural popchips (original flavor)
Description: A new type of pressure-cooked potato chip hailing from San Francisco that is neither fried nor baked. In addition to “original,” the chips come in several flavors such as barbecue, salt & vinegar, cheddar or Parmesan.
Preparation summary: Ready to eat.
High points: Light as rice cakes, though capturing the natural flavor of potatoes. The chips are completely greaseless and contain only 120 calories and four grams of fat per 20 chips.
Low points: None.
Average Retail Price: $2.99 (for three-ounce bags) or $1.29 (for one-ounce single servings).
Availability: Major grocery stores; Whole Foods, Henry’s and CVS Pharmacies
