San Diego Superior Court has set bail at $325,000 for a woman who is accused of shooting her girlfriend after moving in with her about a month ago in El Cajon.
Sade Keyana Peterson, 33, plead not guilty May 26 to assault with a firearm in the May 23 incident that sent the victim to the hospital for a wound in her thigh. Peterson is also charged with same-sex domestic violence and attempting to dissuade the victim, also 33, from reporting the crime.
El Cajon Police officers responded to a 2:30 a.m. 911 call from the victim in the 900 block of Peach Avenue in an apartment. The victim’s 6-year-old daughter was asleep in the residence and was not hurt.
Peterson fled the home before police arrived. However, she contacted police herself and surrendered at 4 a.m. in the parking lot of the Sears Auto Center at Parkway Plaza in El Cajon. Officers recovered a firearm used in the incident in Peterson’s car.
Deputy District Attorney Timothy Campen said the victim and Peterson had known each other a year, but Peterson had been living in Florida until about 1 1/2 months ago.
Peterson moved in with the victim, who was not identified at Campen’s request because it might identify the victim’s daughter who attends a local school.
El Cajon Police said Peterson had a physical altercation with the victim, and the defendant recovered a gun in the residence. The victim and Peterson struggled over the gun before it discharged.
Only one shot was fired, but it passed through one leg and into the left thigh of the other leg, resulting in a fracture, said the prosecutor. It was not a life threatening wound, but she was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Campen asked El Cajon Superior Court Judge Charles Ervin to set bail at $500,000. Peterson remains in the Las Colinas Women’s Detention Facility. A preliminary hearing will be held June 9.
