Haute Coco

It’s great to be back to the glorious weather of San Diego. Events during the past week have both enraged and provided me with some humor in my life. I’m outraged at the massacre in Fallujah. Israel would not have waited this long to respond. Now the radical Muslim clerics have organized large-scale armed protests, and I shudder to think what will happen when we turn over power at the end of June. While I agree that the world is a better place without Saddam in power, I also believe that this administration did not have a clear plan, and are now scrambling. I believe that Mr. Bush made a mistake in taking on this war; the result will be more loss of life, and civil unrest and anarchy in Iraq.
Oh, Michael Jackson! What would life be like without Michael Jackson? He is either completely clueless, or his handlers are morons. So he goes to D.C. on an image building campaign, wearing a red satin beaded blouse, and ends up with some pathetic, low-level officials who seemed more star struck than his die-hard fans. Not only was he on camera hugging young children, he was actually directing the videographer on the angle he wants and video framing. What a shameless act of media manipulation. While he has not been convicted yet, under the circumstances, these elected officials ought to be dumped in the same category of morons.
Ah, Spring is truly here! It’s wonderful to go home after work, while the sun is still out. My passion these days are my Koi and goldfish in my huge pond, with a pagoda fountain from Column One, in my backyard built by my friend Bruce. My Calla Lilies are in bloom. Pretty soon, it’ll be time to roll out the barbeque grill.
Nathan & Matthew, back on Broadway
I got myself house seats to The Producers on Broadway to catch Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick’s return to Broadway. I never saw it when it first opened, because I feel that Nathan Lane hams it up too much in every role he’s played. The last I saw of him was in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. But I psyched myself up with the idea that this was a Mel Brooks invention, and everyone is suppose to overact. And you know what? I loved the show. Nathan and Matthew were so in tune with each other that you’d swear they have private jokes with every line they deliver. Robi Cox and Greg Scott were in New York with me and caught the show as well, thanks to gift tickets from Rick Ford. Sarah Jessica Parker happened to be in the audience that night, and she recognized Robi from an early film project they were involved with, and an invitation was extended to join her backstage to meet her husband. What a nice duo Nathan and Matthew were; it was clear their collaboration has formed a close kinship. What a memorable evening it was!
Priority Pharmacy receives Health Hero Award
We all know that Priority Pharmacy is a staunch supporter of our community, so it should come as no surprise that they were among those honored at the recent Combined Health Agencies’ 10th annual Health Hero Awards reception. The mission of Combined Health Agencies is to improve the community by supporting member agencies through individual and corporate giving.
“We are honored by this prestigious award,” said Monique DeChaine of Priority Pharmacy. “We look forward to continuing to help further the mission of Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, (CCFA nominated Priority Pharmacy for the award) and supporting programs that empower San Diegans living with Crohn’s and Colitis.” Congratulations to all at Priority Pharmacy!

Brunch at Bourbon Street
If you haven’t been to Bourbon Street for brunch lately, the beautiful weather should be enough reason to sit out in the patio and enjoy your mimosas and made-to-order omelets or Belgian waffles with all the trimmings. Of course there’s a lot more brunch goodies to feast on, catered by The Abbey. Brunch is from 10 am to 2:00 p.m., and costs only $10. A few weeks ago, they had the Flag Football League, and last weekend they had the Gay & Lesbian Rowing Federation. Bourbon Street is becoming gay sports central. With a bunch of bar hotties in front and behind the bars, what more could you ask for?
Farewell, Carla
This is the final month for The Flame under the ownership of Carla Coshow, so there will be a few “last dances”. Friday, April 9, will be the last night of Club Therapy with DJ Bryant Pollard. After that, let’s all meet for a recovery session. Tuesday, April 13, will be the Go-Go Boy finals with $200 to the winner. Saturday, April 17, is Carla’s Retirement Party! Let’s all show up and give this gal one hell of a send-off for giving us 20 years of fun and sharing her playground. Two DJs, Hot go-go girls, a special performance at midnight and a FREE buffet. Come in early before Nicole gets to the buffet. Beginning in May, the good guys across the street at Numbers take over, and you know what party animals they are. So look out for an even bigger, better Flame to come!
Move over, Martha
Brini Maxwell is the new lifestyle domestic diva in town. Actually Brini is the alter ego of Ben, whom I’ve known for over 10 years. Brini Maxwell, started her own cable TV show in Manhattan about five years ago, focusing on style, cooking and home tips. Brini loves the vintage looks, having amassed a huge collection of ’50s/’60s outfits. Over the years, she has gained a loyal following with her dry wit and ditzy blonde demeanor. Well, all those years of living the life as a cross between Donna Reed and Marlo Thomas has paid off. Her show was picked up by the Style Network about three months ago. In fact, she made an appearance recently at “Late Night with Conan O’Brien”.
So what’s new these days with “The Brini Maxwell Show”? Well, for one thing, the show actually has a real budget now. In fact, the show has traveled to California, Las Vegas and South Beach. She’s also appeared on E, a sister channel, and gave tips for creating the perfect party during the Golden Globe awards. In her old show, she would invite her drag friends, including the hilarious Mary Ellen, to be guests on her show. Nowadays, they can afford to invite celebrities like Helen Gurley Brown and Rip Taylor. But her look hasn’t changed; she describes herself as a combination “’60s Hitchcock blonde” and is still dishing out those fondue recipes, interior design tips and craft projects, like Martha would. At one show, she gave us helpful hints on how to get smudges off linoleum. Did you ever think of that? In fact when asked about Martha, Brini gave me that signature blank look that is so adorable and said, “Oh my, Martha really got herself into a pickle, hasn’t she?” Catch “The Brini Maxwell Show” every Friday night at 10:00 p.m., on the Style Network (Cox digital cable channel 368). You gotta love this, ahem, girl!

One last thought …

And I do not mean those skinny young lads some of you like.
