Tuna Creations (Sweet and Spicy)
Description: From a line of flavored tuna packaged in 5-ounce foil pouches by Starkist Seafood Company.
Preparation summary: Open and serve.
High points: More spicy than sweet. No stinky tuna water to drain. And no artificial ingredients listed. Suitable for consumers who normally gag over tuna fish. Convenient metallic pouch perfect for space travel. Suggested burrito recipe on back of package could someday supplant the fish tacos at Rubio’s.
Low points: The “lightly marinated” tuna appears in color and texture like Devilwood Ham spread. Heavy spice from chili pepper capable of killing house cats.
Retail price: $2.59
Availability: Most major grocery stores
Dreyer’s Spumoni Ice Cream
Description: Newest flavor from Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream containing a trio of chocolate, pistachio and spumoni with mixed fruit and almonds.

“The spumoni ‘wedges’ sold at Mona Lisa Deli in Little Italy still rule.”
Preparation summary: Serve when frozen.
High points: First commercial spumoni to hit the mass market offers a refreshing change from Neapolitan. Flavor combination provides backwater Americans with a clue as to what the Italians eat for dessert.
Low points: Maraschino cherries and other candied fruit noticeably missing from the “spumoni” section in the trio. Dryer’s also chintzes consumers on the rum and almond extract that normally give this ice cream its distinctive flavor. The spumoni “wedges” sold at Mona Lisa Deli in Little Italy still rule.
Retail price: $5.89
Availability: Most major grocery stores
Egg Beaters, Southwestern flavor
Description: Egg whites packaged in refrigerated 15-ounce carton with pour spout contain red and green bell peppers, onions, chilies and spices. Product is cholesterol-free and fortified with folic acid and vitamins B, D and E.
Preparation summary: Shake carton and pour desired amount of eggs into non-stick skillet over medium heat. Let stand for 30 seconds before scrambling or forming into omelets. If using a microwave, cook in a covered dish on high for one minute. Stir. Then cook an additional 30 to 60 seconds until set.
High points: Zesty flavor and fluffy texture. No gooey eggshells to contend with. And the yellow food coloring makes you swear there are yolks in the mix.

“Zesty flavor and fluffy texture.”
Low points: If you’re cooking on a stovetop and don’t own a non-stick skillet, no amount of cooking spray can prevent these funny eggs from adhering to the pan like super glue.
Retail price: $3.89
Availability: Most major grocery stores
