Published Thursday, 19-Jan-2006 in issue 943
Whether you’re the type who can’t flip an omelet or simply need guidance banging out that next gourmet meal, San Diego offers a variety of fun, interactive cooking classes that can help you stand up to the challenge.
Below are several options for cooking classes that allow you to eat the fruits of your labor when you’re finished.
San Diego Wine and Culinary Center
200 Harbor Dr., Suite 120
(619) 231-6400
Since opening last May, the harbor-front facility located near downtown has rolled out a year-round series of wine and cooking classes held a couple days each week. Proprietors John Alongé and Hans-Trevor Gossmann join leading chefs who present instructional and hands-on classes on a regular basis.
Among the more popular is a sushi rolling class lead by renowned Japanese Chef Mineko Moreno, and another in Italian foods presented by Chef Nadia Frigeri. Prices range from $60 to $80 per class. The center also offers private, customized classes for groups of eight people or more, starting at $35 per person.
Great News! Cooking School
1788 Garnet Ave.
(858) 270-1582
It’s the only place where you’ll find quarterly classes that focus solely on Trader Joe’s products, with the next one scheduled for Feb. 4. In addition, the winter curriculum will feature hands-on classes in sausage, soup and candy making. Instructional classes cover everything from seafood and pressure cooking to Indian curries, hors d’oeuvres and baking.
Classes are held in the daytime and evenings about eight times a week. Prices range from $44 to $69 per person.
Macy’s School of Cooking
1555 Camino de la Reina
(888) 424-3663
Cooking classes are held in an auditorium setting with six television monitors perched above a cook top, which heats up at noon every Saturday and about three evenings a week. The ongoing schedule encompasses everything from hors d’oeuvres and pastry making to full-meal preparation.
Coming up on Feb. 4, Chef Bernard Guillas of the Marine Room presents a class for making a Valentine’s Day dinner of lobster and crab cakes with champagne and wine served. And on Feb. 22, Chef Gavin Kaysen from El Bizcocho shows aspiring cooks how to utilize staples in their homes in a class titled, “What’s in Your Fridge?” Prices range from $10 to $25 per class.
Sur La Table
1915 Calle Barcelona, Suite 130, Carlsbad
(760) 635-1316
This new cooking supply store in coastal North County has seen the likes of Rachel Ray and David Lieberman of the Food TV Network, who have provided hands-on meal demonstrations tailored for home cooks. The winter schedule includes classes in soup making, “fast entrées” and Mardi Gras fare.
Prices range from $50 to $70 per class.
Balboa Park Food and Wine School
House of Hospitality/Balboa Park
(619) 557-9441 ext. 203
Located on the second level in the House of Hospitality, the facility features an exhibition kitchen surrounded by a bar that seats 16 people, plus a separate room for wine classes complete with candelabras and garden views.
For the upcoming fondue classes scheduled this winter, participants share a pot with a fellow pupil for concocting a variety of savory fondue recipes presented by Gina Freize of Venissimo artisan cheese shop. Monthly hands-on sushi classes are also scheduled, along with classes in chocolate, appetizers and gourmet entrées. Prices range from $40 to $65.
Viola!
12873 El Camino Real, Suite M-2
(858) 523-9446
Participants enjoy full meals and sometimes end up with more food than what they’d experience at a restaurant. Wine and cocktails are always served, too.
Chef instructors include David Abella of Roy’s, Susan Sbicca of Meritage, Chris Idso of Pacifica Del Mar and Michel Stroot, formerly of the Golden Door. Among the themes are winter meals, foods for Chinese New Year, tailgate cuisine, plus European dinners. Classes average $55 per person.
Kitchen Witch
127 N. El Camino Real, Suite D, Encinitas
(760) 942-3228
This popular Encinitas kitchen store, which was enlarged a few years ago, has presented cooking classes for the past 20 years. A wrap-around counter that seats 20 people sets the stage for myriad classes and workshops that give pupils the basics in sushi, soups, breads, pizza, vegetarian cooking and more. Television personality “Sam the Cooking Guy” often leads the pack, along with chefs from Seaside Market, Cuvee and Sage Grill.
About 10 classes are held each week. Prices range from $25 to $60 per class.
