Product: Pomegranate V-Fusion by V8
Description: Part of a new line by V8 that incorporates both fruit and vegetable juices into a 46-ounce plastic bottle
Preparation summary: Ready to serve
High points: So tutti-fruity that you’ll never guess there are tomatoes, purple carrots and sweet potatoes in the mix. An eight-ounce serving provides 100 percent vitamin C and traces of vitamins A and E, magnesium, iron and folic acid.
Low points: Tastes a lot like sugary fruit juice from concentrate. And the claim that you get a full serving of veggies and fruit per serving smells a lot like snake oil peddled by some vegan gym rat.
Average retail price: $4.49
Availability: Major grocery stores
Product: Organic Hemp Plus Granola
photo
Description: Low sodium, preservative-free cereal by Nature’s Path containing organic rolled oats, cane juice, molasses, brown rice flour, flaxseeds and hemp seeds
Preparation summary: Eat dry or with milk
High points: Light, crispy and sufficiently sweetened so that kids, too, will like it
Low points: No mind-altering effects ensued after eating two bowls. Hemp seeds contain less than one percent THC, the active ingredient in the drug variety of the cannabis plant. And these seeds are cleaned and de-hulled prior to the cereal’s manufacturing, so don’t bother sifting them out for planting.
Average retail price: $2.29
Availability: Trader Joe’s
Product: Patak’s Vindaloo Curry Paste (hot)
Description: Concentrated curry paste containing cilantro, cumin, turmeric, chilis and ground ginger.
photo
Preparation summary: Add to meat, fish and vegetable dishes with water, milk or yogurt to achieve Indian-style flavor.
High points: The paste punches up those boring stir-frys and sautés with a pleasing “taste of India” essence. Intense, exotic flavor is achieved from adding only a few teaspoons. Plays especially well with chicken and shrimp, and maintains a long shelf life in its jar when refrigerated
Low points: Leaves you with curry breath
Average retail price: $3.89
Availability: Most major grocery stores
Product: Smucker’s Uncrustables Peanut Butter and Strawberry Jam Sandwich
Description: Small, disc-shaped soft bread sandwiches filled with peanut butter and strawberry jam. Contains four to a box
Preparation summary: Keep frozen until ready to eat. Then thaw at room temperature for 30 to 60 minutes.
photo
High points: Spares you from having to pick up a butter knife and exert valuable wrist energy for spreading peanut butter and jelly onto sliced bread
Low points: The round bread casings are spongier and gummier than Wonder Bread, otherwise these might have been a modern solution for convenient and totally contained PBJ sandwiches. Smucker’s should stay out of the white bread business and keep its saccharine products in jars.
Average retail price: $3.49
Availability: Major grocery stores
