What a great weekend! It started for me on Thursday night. It seems the whole city participated in Dining Out for Life, as I heard most of the participating restaurants were full. The cool thing about this event is that you can also drink your way to help fight AIDS – moderately, of course. Kudos to The Center for taking the lead in this national event.
It seems the bars were packed as well. In town for the Miss Gay California, the official state pageant of the Miss Gay U.S. of A, was the reigning national title holder herself, Miss Melissa Edwards from Dallas, Texas. The two-day pageant was held at the beautiful Brass Rail, with seven contestants from all over the state of California.
That same night, I hosted my monthly “It’s Raining Men” wet underwear contest at Bacchus House. The bar was packed with so many amazing people who were out to have fun and see a great show. My guest was Rascal exclusive Blake Riley, who is the nicest young porn stud from Texas. Some of you may recognize Blake from his occasional appearances on Randyblue.com. Next month, my guest porn star is Jeremy Hall, who’s an upcoming star and has appeared in many videos for various studios, including Falcon. So come and say hello on Thursday, May 31.
The weekend came to an all-time high with all the major Democratic presidential candidates descending on San Diego for a political rally sponsored by the California Democratic Party. I hope you took time out to hear what each had to say.
Encore New York
I ran out of space in my column last month about my recent New York trip, so here’s an encore. If you have been reading my column for the last few years, you no doubt know that I love going to the theater. Every chance I get, I always try to catch a Broadway show.
My best gal pal, Edith, got us tickets to see the brand new Kander and Ebb musical, Curtains, starring David Hyde Pierce as the stage-struck, small-town sleuth, who is a cross between Colombo and Dick Tracy. Pierce is, of course, lovingly known as Niles Crane from TV’s “Frasier,” and was last seen on Broadway in the highly acclaimed Spamalot. This show, set in 1959 at a Boston theater where the western musical Robbin’ Hood was having its tryouts before going to Broadway, has more murder in two hours than Clue. Pierce is as adorable as one would expect, and co-star Debra Monk (Steel Pier), as the brassy producer, could have been reprising her performance in Chicago, except for a different script and songs. The show stopper has to be the bawdy, tootin’ and hollerin’ closing number in the first act, “Thataway,” with outstanding and totally exhausting performances by Karen Ziemba and Noah Racey. So the show received mixed reviews – who cares? I walked out of the theater totally entertained.
Broadway is swarming with celebrities these days taking on roles in long-running shows. Fantasia of “American Idol” is in The Color Purple, while fellow Idol Josh Strickland plays Tarzan in the new Disney production. “Dancing with the StarsJoey Lawrence took on the role of Billy Flynn in Chicago recently, while Harry Hamlin and wife, TV Soap Star Lisa Renna, join the cast on June 10 in this longest-running revival of a musical. Donny Osmond is also slated to reprise his role as Gaston in the closing show of Beauty and the Beast.

Other notable shows on Broadway are Deuce, a new play by Terrence McNally starring Angela Lansbury; Grey Gardens with Mary Louise Wilson and Christine Ebersole; Springs Awakening, an explosive rock musical about young adults discovering their sexuality that is getting so much buzz not seen on Broadway since Rent; and the Tony-winner Jerry Mitchell (Hairspray) brings the lovable Elle Woods from the big screen to Broadway in Legally Blonde. Of course, you can also catch David Hasselhoff in drag in the Las Vegas production of The Producers. Or maybe not!
