Cryptic burger speak
Published Thursday, 17-May-2007 in issue 1012
The next time you dash into an In-N-Out Burger, listen closely to the lingo that some customers use to order items not found on the company’s concise menu board. What might sound like carnal specifications from a gay personal ad have, over the years, become part of a secret language that allows fast-food lovers to score hamburgers and fries exactly to their liking.
For instance, how about a tryst with a meat patty made “animal style?” Just ask for it at any In-N-Out location and you’ll get it topped with sautéed onions instead of raw ones, plus pickles, extra “special sauce” and a bun that is grilled with mustard. According to one employee, it’s the company’s most highly requested “underground burger.” Ask for “animal style” fries to go with it, and the spuds come topped with In-N-Out’s secret sauce, grilled onions and two slices of melted cheese. They’re as decadent, if not better than chili cheese fries!
Or maybe a “Flying Dutchman” will rev your jets. No, it isn’t some blond Nordic blade swinging overhead on a trapeze, but rather another exclusive burger that features two meat patties with two slices of cheese. That’s it. There are no fixings or condiments to interfere with the experience.
Utter the words “double meat” and you’ll get the menu’s Double Double burger, minus the cheese. Or if size truly matters, then feed your dream with a whopping “4x4,” which translates to four meat patties with four slices of cheese!
According to an In-N-Out order taker in Mission Valley, the company will slap onto a bun as many patties and cheese slices as a customer wishes. “I once had a person request five patties and six pieces of cheese with double onions in the middle layer. And he was a skinny guy!” she recalled.
Below are a few other off-the-menu choices that are neither advertised nor posted on the menu boards, but yours for the asking once you’re in the know.
Wish Burger” – a bun and all the fixings sans the meat patty

Protein Style” – A bun-free burger wrapped in lettuce
Old Fashioned Style” – A burger with ketchup and mustard instead of the calorie-laced special sauce
The 2x4” – Two meat patties with four slices of cheese.
The Grilled Cheese” – Same as a “Wish Burger,” but with melted cheese.
Fries Well Done” – They are cooked longer and come out twice as crispy and more brown compared to how they are normally made.
Choco-Vanilla Swirl” – A shake exactly how it sounds
The Neapolitan” – A blend of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry shakes
