Paris Hilton is in the slammer! Hooray! The streets of Los Angeles are much safer now. If only we can get Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie off the streets as well. Maybe they can make a movie together, like Jailhouse Angels.
Bursting with Pride
Happy Pride to all! L.A. Pride is this weekend, and it promises to be one of the biggest yet. The festival will run from noon to midnight on Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday. This year, there will be a special Transgender Empowerment Area and a separate Erotic City for adults only, where I will be all weekend with the boys. The festival will be south of Santa Monica Boulevard, from Robertson to San Vicente, and features headliner Joan Jett. The parade kicks off at 11 a.m. on Sunday, with NBA Hall of Famer John Amaechi as the Grand Marshall. The parade is located on Santa Monica Boulevard, from Crescent Heights to Robertson Boulevard, and will feature Cirque du Soleil. Come early or you’ll end up parking in Long Beach.
Speaking of Pride, New York City Pride weekend is one week earlier this year. The Leather Pride Night Auction is on Saturday, June 16, and the N.Y.C. LGBT Center’s annual Garden Party is on Monday, June 18. The parade will be on Sunday, June 24, followed by a huge Dance on the Pier.
San Diego Pride is also a week earlier. I will be in town to host the Pride Wet Underwear Contest at Bacchus House on Thursday, July 19, and my special porn guests with be the incredibly hot guys from randyblue.com. The parade will be on Saturday, July 21, with Bruce Abrams as one of our Grand Marshals.
Chicago, Chicago
I took a trip to Chicago on Memorial Day weekend for the International Mr. Leather competition and the Grabby Awards. The IML weekend took over the Palmer House Hilton, and it was amazing to see thousands of leather men and a few women carousing at the lobby bar and in every hallway and stairwell. I was told that there was a lot of action going on all weekend, but I always seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The leather market spans four ballrooms, and you can get anything from leather to fetish wear, hard core DVDs and unusual toys (that I can’t figure out). There was even a covered piercing booth next to ours, and, occasionally, it would get a screamer. We’d just giggle every time.
The competition was held at the landmark Chicago Theatre, an amazing space with gold-gilded proscenia and a frescoed dome ceiling. There were a total of 52 contestants, including five foreigners. I was disappointed that San Diego did not have an entry, but was thrilled that Mr. L.A. Leather Mikel Gerle emerged victorious. The guest entertainer was Hal Sparks from “Queer as Folk,” and he was hilarious.
One of the most interesting moments was when I was watching the Chicago Memorial Day parade earlier that day on CNN, and in the background was the majestic Chicago Theatre advertising the International Mr. Leather Contest on their marquee. The after-party was held at the House of Blues and was packed. The man scent was so strong, I was glad to be in the VIP area several floors above the dance floor.
The Grabby Awards for gay adult videos presented by Gay Chicago was also held the same weekend. Hosted by Porn diva Chi Chi LaRue and Chicago’s own drag legend Honey West, the duo kept the hot porn boys coming and going, with Johnny Hazzard, Matthew Rush and Kent North acting as co-hosts. Comedian extraordinaire Bruce Vilanch was also on hand to present an award. A big winner was Steven Scarborough’s Justice for Hot House Studios, who brought a gang of muscle studs, including my new favorites Francesco de Macho (I didn’t make up that name) and Vinnie D’ Angelo. The after-party was held at the Circuit night club on Halstead, with Chi Chi spinning and the Rascal boys – Johnny Hazzard, Tyler Riggz and Blake Riley – dancing. This was a great time to visit Chicago with nice weather all weekend.

Chicago is a beautiful city with many attractions, like the Chicago Art Institute, the Sears Tower, Lake Michigan, Wrigley Field, the Miracle Mile, deep dish pizza, and, of course, Oprah’s home on beautiful Lake Shore Drive. Chicago also has a very vibrant gay community with a bustling gay business area on North Halstead and Clark streets.
Good eats
It’s fascinating how many new restaurants open in San Diego every week, like the fun and tasty new creation of Chef Chris Walsh, Bite, on University Avenue in the Uptown District. And because I love food, I’m always adventurous and eager to try new places.
So when the new Celadon on Fifth Avenue in Hillcrest (formerly Region and Mixx before that) opened recently, my friend Edith dragged me to the very white restaurant for a taste. The new Celadon is a fairly large restaurant, done entirely in contemporary white and black. The reception area, complete with a white baby grand piano, looks like a hotel lobby, and the main dining area is so ritzy that one is almost afraid to talk too loud or come underdressed. The menu is moderately expensive for an Asian restaurant, so I was expecting to get great Thai food. I was immediately disappointed that part of the menu has a selection of sauces and sauté style and you can pick your meat. I didn’t think this was in keeping with the high style of the restaurant. But I was willing to reserve my judgment. The waiter we had was pushy and difficult to understand – and I’m Asian! Edith had a cup of wonton soup that she swears was the best wonton ever, but the broth was rather bland. I opted for the stuffed chicken wings, a favorite of mine. The angel hair noodle and vegetable stuffing was pretty tasty, but the chicken skin was rather chewy, which was a letdown. Whenever I try a Thai restaurant, I always ask for Pad Thai as a way of judging how good the food will be. Here they were fairly successful and the entrée came with an unexpected 10 large shrimp. Edith didn’t fare as well; the mixed vegetable with beef came without the beef. And when they hurriedly brought the dish back, it seems like they just added the beef to the same vegetables, rendering the vegetables overcooked and limp.
My overall impression is that the interior was worthy of a spread in Architectural Digest, but overdone for an Asian restaurant, making the place rather uncomfortable to dine in. For a ritzy restaurant with high prices to boot, I was quite happy when the waiter brought fresh plates after our appetizer course, but also surprised that he gingerly left the used utensils on the white tablecloth for the next course. Somehow that just didn’t make sense. I was also rather surprised that they would present us with special menus that had food stains on them. This first visit was a disappointment. But this is not a restaurant review and I’m not a food critic. I‘m just a food lover, especially of Asian cuisine, and I’m willing to go back a second time and see if I still feel the same.
On a brighter note, word is super chef Brian Malarkey of Oceanaire will be one of the chefs competing on season three of the Bravo reality TV show “Top Chef.” Being a loyal devotee of Oceanaire, especially of their sinfully rich lobster bisque and truly fresh and lump crab cakes, I will be glued to the television rooting for Brian, who’s always tops in my list of great chefs in San Diego.
Go sisters
I’m thrilled to report my sister Fifi is now hosting Bitchy Bingo at LIPS every Wednesday night, and my much older sister Cristina Monet hosts the Wet Underwear Contest at Flicks on Saturday nights.
I’ll be back in San Diego on Thursday, June 21, for my monthly Wet Underwear Contest at Bacchus House. My guest will be super hot porn puppy Derrick Hanson, whose many performances for various studios earned him several GayVN nominations, including Best Newcomer. Before I go, here’s a big happy birthday to Emperor Robi Cox this weekend.
