Bar Fly
Published Thursday, 01-Nov-2007 in issue 1036
With Halloween falling on a Wednesday this year, revelers partied on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Bars and clubs across town hosted a number of amazing parties and the all of the clubs were packed. What a month!
Of course, the end of October was also marked by the devastating fires that ravaged portions of San Diego County. Our local bars and clubs served as places of refuge for people. Many people ended up being off work and out of school for the week and needed somewhere to go to get their minds off the news for awhile. Others headed to bars to enjoy the company of others and discuss the situation. There were certainly those who criticized people who chose to host parties or patronize bars and clubs during this time of great tragedy. I even noticed a couple of discussion groups that were created on the popular online social networking site, Facebook.com, that admonished anyone who went to a bar/club or hosted a party during the fires.
While my heart goes out to all who have been affected by the terrible San Diego firestorm, it is important to remember that everyone deals with devastation differently, and our local bars and nightclubs were open, serving as a diversion for people who just needed to get away. Also, many bars and clubs are in the process of organizing fund-raisers and donation drives to assist the victims of the fires. Rich’s San Diego utilized its large e-mail list to encourage customers to make a donation to the American Red Cross, as the club itself did. As I get more word on fund-raisers and donation drives that are being held in our clubs and bars, I will pass the word on to you. As I have said many times before, you might as well let your alcohol dollars go toward a good cause!
I’m exhausted from all of the fabulous events that happened in October. But November is officially here, and my calendar is already completely booked! It all kicks off this weekend, with two awesome events that I will definitely be attending. On Nov. 2, one of San Diego’s most legendary (and beautiful) nightclubs and lounges, The Brass Rail, will celebrate its 47th anniversary! The evening will include a special appearance by the queen of ‘80s, Stacey Q, who will perform some of her hits, including “Shy Girl,” “Two of Hearts,” “Playback,” and “The Edge of Love.” The Brass Rail has served our community for almost half a century, and it continues to not only be a great place to party but a nightclub that continues to give back. Don’t miss out on this special night at the Brass Rail Nightclub and Lounge. Visit www.thebrassrailsd.com for details.
The following evening, Nov. 3, head over to Rich’s for a special edition of the popular Saturday night Voltage event. This particular evening will be Nikno’s Big Ass Birthday Bash. Our favorite DJ invites you to his club to celebrate his birthday! The evening will include finger foods provided by Bite, special performances and birthday surprises, and Nikno will spin from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. If you haven’t checked out Voltage, it’s definitely worth it! Saturday nights at Rich’s are gaining momentum, and the sexy crowds are starting to flock there. Nikno always spins an amazing set of funky uplifting house music that keeps people dancing all night long. Check out www.richssandiego.com for more information.
Speaking of Rich’s, Club Papi will be celebrating 5 years in San Diego on Saturday, Nov. 10. The evening will include the sexy Papi go-go dancers, drink specials, ID Lube and other prize giveaways, and a live performance by Amber, who will perform many of her hits, including “Sexual.” As they say, there “Ain’t no party like a papi party!” Check out www.clubpapi.com for more information.
Finally, the long-anticipated arrival of Hillcrest’s newest hot-spot, Universal is approaching. Don’t start lining up on University Avenue quite yet; there’s still some construction to be done. But Universal will be hosting another preview party on Nov. 8 from 6-9 p.m. at the House.Boi store in North Park. Guests will get a first taste of Universal’s mixology experience and will be able to sample food from Dish, the restaurant at Universal. You must be on the guest list to attend. E-mail info@universalhillcrest.com to be added. As the opening of Universal nears, I will be featuring an entire column giving you all the scoop! I have arranged an interview with Billy Nordmeier, the sexy general manager, and I will feature it in an upcoming column. “Isn’t anticipation a bitch?”
Until next time, be safe, and keep me posted about any events or venues I should check out!
