End of summer hoorahs!
Published Thursday, 03-Sep-2009 in issue 1132
As summer comes to an end, even though it is now hotter than it was all season long, it is time for many people to buckle down and get back to work or school. Since I started a master’s degree program last year, the three months I had free from classes was a welcome break. I certainly had my share of fun this summer. Summer flings and Pride hook-ups are also common at this time of year, with September being “decision” time – is it just a fling, or is this going anywhere? Along the way, I hope you had some time to enjoy the many amazing events as well as lazy days and nights at our local bars and clubs this summer.
One thing I have found in the many years I have written this column is that no matter what time of year it is, there is always something going on. So many times I have written about the end of a “fun season” (like Pride, summer, the holidays, etc.) just to be followed by a non-stop selection of more fun to come. We gays know how to party, so why not close out the summer on a high note (or at least with a cruise)!
This weekend, Michael Mack is hosting a Labor Day Sunday T-Dance on the Bay, aboard the Spirit of San Diego. These gay bay cruises are always fun and worth checking out. DJ Taj will spin as partiers dance, drink and flirt on San Diego Bay. A limited number of tickets are still available so if you want to go, I suggest you get yours now! Boarding begins at noon, with the cruise going from 1 to 4 p.m. Tickets are on sale at Obelisk Bookstore located at 1029 University Ave. or online at www.groovetickets.com. Since there is no work for most the following day, you might as well continue the party after the cruise! Ticket stubs from the cruise will get you free cover and front-of-the-line privileges at Urban Mo’s popular Detour Sunday, as well as discounted cover and front-of-the-line before 11 p.m. at Rich’s Summer Splash Party. The best part is that proceeds from this event will benefit the HRC (you know I love events that are fundraisers for our community organizations!). See you on board!
Since it is a holiday weekend, it means it is time for another one of Rich’s popular Active Duty: The Military Party events. In collaboration with San Diego Pix, Rich’s will be transformed into a sexy military themed paradise complete with hot military go-go boys on the evening of Saturday, Sept. 5. Kevin from Kevin’s Modern Barber Shop will also be on hand offering free buzz cuts – and it is so hot out, I’m considering taking him up on that offer. The first 500 people through the door will get a free Active Duty dog tag, and military/”cammo” attire is encouraged! Valid military identification will get you in free before 11 p.m., and will get you half off cover from 11:01 p.m. on. This night will be packed! Check out the Featured Events on www.sdpix.com/events for more information.
Bourbon Street will be plenty of fun this weekend, starting off with a Foam Party and Wet Underwear Contest on Thursday, Sept. 3. Whether you want to strip down and frolic in the foam or just watch the wet boys in their underwear, it will be a fun night. “Boys Night Out” will be on Friday. Bring your boys and DJ John Joseph will provide the music. DJ Dallas will spin on Saturday night and balls will be everywhere as Bourbon Street hosts a “Beach Ball Party.” With its beautiful outdoor patio and fun atmosphere, Bourbon Street, located at 4612 Park Blvd., is the perfect place to spend the holiday weekend.
I know that many of you are not going to be feeling very well on Labor Day Monday – hangover time! While I encourage you to stay hydrated and drink a lot of water, there are several ways to spend the day. I plan to spend Labor Day poolside, and the Lafayette Hotel and Se’ San Diego Hotel have two of the best poolside bars in town. If the party just is not quite over for you yet, the intersection of First and University is calling your name! Urban Mo’s will host its popular Recovery Monday T-Dance Party with DJ Taj from 2-9 p.m. and Fiesta Cantina, just across the street, will be open providing the great drink specials and fun that it does seven days a week.
Have fun this weekend! While it feels like we are living in a never-ending swelter, the days will only get colder, offering fewer opportunities to frolic in the San Diego sunshine. Be safe!
