Keeping up around town!
Published Thursday, 15-Oct-2009 in issue 1138
Like I always say, there is just so much going on around town. We really have so many options that it is hard on many weekend nights to pick which bar or club to hit. Certainly, when two or three great events are going on a given night, hitting multiple spots is an option. For many people, especially in the current economic climate, club-hopping is not feasible when cover charges are involved, making the choice of party spots for the evening more difficult. This weekend is another one of those times where I just can not decide where to go, so I will most likely be feverishly (but safely) going from bar to club to bar to make sure I can participate in all of the fabulous events.
Thursday nights just got even more fun. Of course, Bourbon Street is a great place to be for San Diego Pix’s weekly WET event, starting at 10 p.m. But now also on Thursday nights is a brand new option at Universal! Starting tonight, Universal will host Jueves de Rumbera every Thursday starting at 8 p.m. The evening will include Latin house and top 40 hits by DJ XP, free cover, happy hour from 8-10 p.m. and $15 corona buckets. The Grand Opening Party is tonight, with a hosted bar from 8-9 p.m. Don’t miss out on San Diego’s newest hot night out!
This Friday I am going to start my evening off at Universal. From 6-8 p.m. Prop 8 Films will be hosting a fundraiser to support their The Heart of the Matter feature length documentary, which will discuss marriage equality and the GLBT civil rights movement. It is so important that these stories are told and this fun event will support that work. The evening will include food and entertainment, a sneak peak of the documentary, and a question and answer session with the filmmakers. Tickets are $20. For those who love bears, the third Saturday of the month means it is L.L. Bear time at Rich’s. This is always a hot night that draws in the “men” and all that sexy chest fuzz. I am told that this is also BearQuake Weekend which means that the night will be even bigger than usual. The club will open early for the Mr. SoCal Bear/Cub Contest from 6:30-9:30 p.m. and the L.L. Bear party will follow until 2 a.m. For more information, check out www.richssandiego.com.
If you missed the Club Montage Reunion Party last month, or loved it so much that you want more, you are in luck. Montage Saturdays are finally back and the buzz is in the air! Spin Nightclub and Michael Mack will present Double Dose this Saturday from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. at 2028 Hancock St. DJs Bryan Pfeifer and Taj will spin, and Frenchie Davis will perform live at midnight. David Espinosa will also perform at 10 p.m. This is going to be another exciting night at San Diego’s largest nightclub venue, and one of the few locations that offer afterhours. By the way, have you noticed that the old Hawthorn’s location is open again? It is now called West Coast Tavern and has been upgraded and re-vamped. West Coast offers a selection of small plates served until midnight every night and also includes two full bars. The bars are fully stocked, but include a vast selection of bourbons, and have a number of house specialties. Resident DJs and live jazz bands perform seven nights a week. If you have not yet checked out West Coast Tavern, stop by! It is located at 2895 University Ave. in the North Park Theater Building. For more information, visit www.westcoasttavern.com.
As for Halloween, it is now just weeks away! Halloween is like the ultimate gay holiday and I know some people who prepare their costumes a year in advance. A number of fabulous events will be going on around town, including the Fang Bang at Universal, and some great parties at Rich’s, the club that continues to amaze me year after year with how they deck the place out! More details about Halloween will be coming in the next column!
Be safe this weekend!
