Shelter

If Brokeback Mountain was known as the “gay cowboy movie,” then Shelter may very well be “the gay surfer movie.” But that label only marginalizes the theme at the film’s core: being true to yourself.
Zach (Trevor Wright) is resigned to give up his pursuit of going to art school to play father to his nephew while his sister Jeanne (Tina Holmes) shirks her motherly duties. When his best friend and surfing buddy, Gabe (Ross Thomas), exits to go to college, Gabe’s older brother Shaun (Brad Rowe) enters and changes Zach’s life in a fundamental way.
Shelter earned critical accolades at a number of film festivals in many different cities, and racked up awards for Best Feature Film (Dallas), Best New Director (Seattle) and Best Actor (Tampa).
S is for Sexy
Wolfe Video
$24.95
S is for Sexy is a collection of short films that emanate from The U.S. and points abroad. The seven shorts within the compilation highlight the different facets that make up the gay male bonding ritual, commonly known as dating, each with a different take.
France’s entry, Serene Hunter, explores one man’s quest to get more from a man that is unobtainable to him. Scarred from Great Britain, the U.S. made Solace, and the German produced short, 41 Seconds, all deal with close encounters of the sexual kind.
Sharam & Abbas, which hails from The Netherlands, details two middle-aged men seeking asylum and each other. Signage (USA) and Mr_Right_22 (Germany) chronicles both the old-fashioned way of meeting someone in a bar, and its modern day equivalent of prowling the Internet for romance.

Moroccan Roll
Steven Stanley
$23.95
iUniverse, Inc.
Author Steven Stanley has parlayed his four-year experience of teaching and living in Morocco into his debut novel, Moroccan Roll, which is being likened to Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City.
The book features an eclectic cast of characters, both gay and straight, and their assorted foibles set against this exotic backdrop of Morocco during the 1970s. In true Maupin fashion, Stanley makes this locale as central a character in the book as Maupin did with San Francisco, exploring the way of the life in Morocco, and how it influences the characters that people his novel.
There is Dave, who is using Morocco as a means to escape from a closeted boyfriend, only to find himself smack dab of the same situation, by falling for a young, straight student. Janna is also utilizing Morocco as an escape route via drug use, which puts a purple haze on the heartbreak she encountered with a Moroccan.
Also coping with the aftereffects of a love affair gone south is Claudette, which has left her lifestyle of being rich and famous in question. Kevin, too, is hoping to pick up the pieces, after suffering the tragic loss of his first lover. Desperately hoping to open up avenues for her life is Marcie, a Wisconsin girl, who falls head-over-heels in love with the most nefarious playboy in all of Morocco.

Donna Summer
Crayons
$18.97
Burgundy S
During the 1970s and into the 1980s, one woman reigned supreme as the undisputed “Queen of Disco,” and that woman is of course, Donna Summer. During her tenure atop the pop charts, Summer racked up an impressive roster of hits with “Love To Love You Baby,” “I Feel Love,” “On The Radio,” “Hot Stuff,” “She Works Hard For The Money,” and “Bad Girls.”
Now, 33 years after the initial toot toots, hey, beeps beeps that fueled many a Saturday Night Fever and made her synonymous with dance music, Summer is back with her first new album of material in 17 years!
And, as the aptly named first track on Crayons decrees, that is plenty of reason for music lovers to “Stamp Your Feet,” because Summer is back to reclaim her dance-oriented throne.
photo
On Crayons, Summer doesn’t color outside of the lines of what defines her as a dance floor diva, as there are plenty of songs on the CD to get your booty shakin’. “Mr. Music,” an ode to her love of rhythm, the Rihanna-esque “Crayons,” “The Queen is Back,” a nod to her musical heritage, helps in that endeavor, and propels her back into the pop music scene.
Portishead
Third
$13.98
Mercury
Although Portishead is calling its latest CD Third, it is in fact, their fourth, and is its first one in 10 years, since 1998’s “Roseland NYC live.”
The band first scored a hit with 1994’s “Numb,” and its first stab at success was at odds with the band’s desire to not be showcased in the spotlight, and this lead it to drop out of sight for three years, resurfacing with its 1997 self-titled CD.
Third is an eclectic mix of various musical influences, which vacillates between tender string instrumentals, frenetic synth beats and guitar heavy sounds; but the glue that holds these songs together is that they feature hauntingly, evocative vocals on every track.
Hilary McRae

Through These Walls
$14.98
Hear Music
Hilary McRae is the first artist to be signed to the burgeoning music label, Hear Music, which was started up this year by Starbuck’s Entertainment and Concorde Music Group.
And, her debut CD is infused with enough add shots of soul and R & B, to fill many a Venti Vanilla Latte, and her cup runneth over in terms of seamlessly blending old school and modern day pop stylings.
Her voice displays a maturity that seems to be beyond her 21 years on the tracks, “Every Day (when will you be mine),” “Consider Me Gone,” “Why Can’t Now,” and “Waiting.”
McRae is definitely an artist on the rise and a talented force to be reckoned with by writing her own songs, which will have listeners buzzing for many years to come.
Singled Out
Duffy
photo
“Mercy”
Duffy is becoming a very well-known artist, thanks in part to the first single, “Mercy,” off of her CD, Rockferry. The video for the song has been in heavy rotation on VH-1, and she recently did a guest spot on “Ellen.”
This English import seems to have been cryogenically frozen during the 1960s, and thawed out today to embody the spirit of the late, great Dusty Springfield.
“Mercy” imbues a bygone era combined with a contemporary sensibility, as her catchy chorus of: “I’m begging you for mercy/Why don’t you release me?” doesn’t come off as a plea, but a command.
And “Mercy” certainly commands attention, as it is a pure pop song of the highest order, and worthy of adoration.
