Bar Fly

Even though my last column was just two weeks ago, there’s been a whirlwind of activity to report.
San Diego Pride is one weekend we anticipate all year long, and it comes and goes in a flash. All we’re left with when it’s over are photos (many of which we don’t remember taking in drunken stupors), sunburns and another year to wait for the next celebration.
Pride 2008 was an amazing celebration. I met incredible new people, caught up with old acquaintances I hadn’t seen in years, got into a big fight with a friend, and spent an evening in a broken down car with my best friend.
On Pride Saturday, my friend and I stopped at CVS on Washington Street to pick up a pack of gum before heading to 4th & B for the Popsicle Party. Unfortunately, I didn’t heed the advice of my mechanic two years ago when he told me I needed a new car battery within six months. After buying a pack of Eclipse and getting $40 cash back, my best friend and I headed back to my Xterra and … nothing. Dead. Gone. I called my towing service and was promised a truck within an hour. It was only midnight and we knew we had plenty of time to spare. Popsicle was scheduled to rage on until after 5 a.m. so we knew we’d be fine.
It turns out that the tow-truck’s luck was just as bad as mine. It broke down too. Instead of dispatching another truck, we had to wait for the original to be fixed. It took three hours, and we were finally rescued around 3 a.m. By this time we had bonded, filled up on greasy Mexican food and were pretty tuckered out. The uneventful evening proved again, it’s not where you spend your evening but who you spend it with that matters.
Don’t worry – I’m not going to get all spiritual and emotional on your asses! I still love to have a good time while checking out the hotties at all the hot spots around town. My favorite new spot around town is Hula’s! This Hawaiian-themed bar and grill just popped up where Brazil By the Hill used to be, across Third Avenue from Urban Mo’s. Customers at Hula’s Beach Bar and Grill feel like they’ve stepped into an upscale, but comfortable beach bar in Hawaii. What’s nice about Hula’s is that it is a very comfortable bar, where board shorts, flip-flops and tank tops are welcome and encouraged. It’s especially welcome, as many of our Hillcrest bars and clubs are “raising the bar” and enforcing dress codes and no-sandals policies.
I’m a big fan of the beach, and sometimes on a hot summer Sunday afternoon, I just want to go straight from the beach to the bar. I don’t want to go home and get all dolled up after the sun has drained my last bit of energy, so Hula’s is the perfect casual restaurant/bar! My favorite drink there is the Teddy Pear, which is made with vodka and has a sliced pear in the glass. Hula’s is located at 142 University Ave. in Hillcrest.
I also had the opportunity to check out Andrew Roy and Chris Honeycutt’s newest creation, “Psyche.” This night is a celebration of my favorite decade – the 1990s. I have been waiting since Jan. 1, 2000 for a club promoter to create a 90s nigh, and here it is. Thursday nights at Bacchus House now feature 90 cent cover, 90 cent drinks, and 90s music all night long. The Sex Bomb Dancers provide the eye candy, and Svedka Martinis are just $5. The 90s really was an exciting time and now we get to relive the decade every Thursday night. When I arrived at Bacchus House on Pride Thursday, I ran into Andrew outside the club. He apologized for how dead it was inside reminding me that the event was competing with Pride events, including Bourbon Street’s foam party. While the two rooms were not packed, it was far from dead. And by midnight a very large crowd began to fill up the front and back rooms at the club. Andrew- has nothing to worry about! Psyche is a hit, and people are still telling me how “sick” the night was. Keep it up! Bacchus House is located at 3054 University Ave. in North Park.
Slap on a pair of sandals, hit the beach, and then party it up afterward. Enjoy!
