Just say ‘no’
Published Thursday, 05-Feb-2009 in issue 1102
Have you ever just wanted to spend a quiet Friday night at home watching Lifetime movies, drinking wine and relaxing on your big, comfy sofa?
Some may be thinking, “That sounds nice. I do that frequently.” Others may be thinking, “That’s fine every so often, but could get boring.” Personally, I know many of you out there who are screaming, “OMG Benny! Why would you sit at home on a Friday night?”
It used to be I couldn’t miss a single night out on the circuit, let alone stay in on a Friday night, which was considered a mortal sin.
Now that I’m a few years older, I’ve learned it is OK and actually quite refreshing to stay home every so often – as long as you don’t curl into the isolated hole of your television set or Adam4Adam account.
One of the biggest challenges to carving out some alone time at home is friends. Every so often, I decide to stay in on a Friday, Saturday, or Wednesday night, and suddenly my phone is ringing off the hook, and the “Where r u?” text messages start streaming in.
When I answer the phone or reply to the text saying, “Staying home 2nite” the usual response is a hostile “Why?” as if I’m being interrogated for robbing a bank or murdering someone. If staying in on a Friday night is a mortal sin, friends are quick to dole out penance.
All this is on my mind because I’ve run into friends recently who have gotten so caught up with going out six nights a week they’ve lost sight of what they need to do to be a productive member of society. I had a friend recently who got so caught up in the scene he quit school, and another who lost his job for coming into work drunk (from the night before!).
I love going out. Everyone should live it up every now and then and have fun, but this column will serve as my annual PSA to my readers to learn how to say “no” every once in a while. If you don’t make it to Manic Monday this week, I guarantee you, it will be there next week.
I understand: it really is hard to say “no” when there are so many fun things happening around town.
Bacchus House has a new Friday night event called “Papacito San Diego.” If you haven’t yet heard, as of Jan. 30, Club Papi is no longer producing ¡Pan Dulce! San Diego at Bacchus House.
The club is now producing its own Latin night which includes two “caliente” dance floors, the “hard and horny” Mango Dancers, and drink specials. Bacchus House is located at 3054 University Ave. in North Park.
Rich’s Voltage parties are always a lot of fun, and the next one is this Saturday. Voltage always includes incredible music spun by DJ Nikno, sexy go-go dancers and hot boys everywhere. Grab your friends and get there early to avoid the line. Rich’s is located at 1051 University Ave. in Hillcrest.
Even though it may be OK to miss one Monday at The Brass Rail, be sure to check out Manic Monday if you haven’t. Now just more than a year old, The Brass Rail’s Manic Monday is the hot-spot in San Diego to kick off the week. Hundreds of people pack the club each week and enjoy cheap drinks and hot ’80s remixes. It’s just so much fun – how could you say no?
And, of course, Bourbon Street is always a destination.
Bourbon Street has an array of weekly events, including the popular Truth or Dare contest with Jonathan Hale, “Balls to the Walls” dance party, Reverse Cover Saturdays, and even an All You Can Eat Buffet for just $5.95 from 5-7 p.m. on weekdays. If you haven’t stopped by Bourbon Street lately, pop in – you’ll have a great time. Bourbon Street is located at 4612 Park Blvd. in University Heights.
Don’t forget to practice the art of saying “no” at least once before Pride. A true Bar Fly knows how to have wherever he is, at home or in the club! See you out and about!
