Bacchus booming!
Published Thursday, 19-Mar-2009 in issue 1108
The purpose of my column is to be fun, light hearted, informative and give you a run down on the weekly bar events here in San Diego. That being said I owe an apology to Robi Cox and Dr. Gregory Scott, the owners of Bacchus House.
For more years than most people reading this column have lived in San Diego, these two men have given a great deal of money back to San Diego and opened both their beautiful home and club to countless charity events.
Two weeks ago in this space, I ventured into territory treating one of my favorite bars in town unfairly. I was holding them up to a microscope no other club could pass. That was unfair to Bacchus House and to our community.

Certainly, as a columnist who writes about bars and clubs in town, it is my job to give you the “scoop” on what is going on around town and my opinions on the various nightspots I visit. Unfortunately, I wrote information about Bacchus House that I was not able to substantiate, which presented the popular nightclub in a poor light.
This was certainly not my intention, and to owners Robi Cox, Dr. Gregory Scott, General Manager Allan Spyere-Spackman, the staff, performers and, of course, patrons of Bacchus House, I again extend my deepest apologies.
That being said, I recently spoke with Robi and other members of his staff who said the club has a high-tech, state-of-the-art sound and lighting system, which it continually upgrades. Bacchus House actually has a fairly large space, with different rooms and spaces for patrons to enjoy. Just like any popular club, it gets crowded, but by no means does that mean the space is cramped. After all, what’s better than a crowded night club with tons of hot guys! Again, I have always enjoyed Bacchus House and will continue to keep you informed about all the club’s events.

The Friday night Latin party for everyone also features Edgar dancing and drink specials all night.
The intention of the column was certainly not to “bash” Bacchus House, but unfortunately, the way I crafted my words it came across that way. As I have always had a great time at this venue, again, I am sorry!
So what is so cool about Bacchus House? First, let’s start with the staff. Some of you may remember San Diego’s Update newspaper, which was published from 1979-2006. In the paper’s final nine months, I had the privilege of writing the bi-weekly social/scene column titled “Out with Benny!” I recently stumbled across a 2005 column in which I called Bacchus House “my absolute favorite club in town” with the “friendliest staff around.”
That still rings true today and Bacchus House continues to boast a very friendly staff, and many have worked there almost as long as the bar has been open, including Spyere-Spackman and VJ Richard Poole. Even the security guards are always nice and welcoming.

Bacchus House also has a great weekly line-up. My favorite night at Bacchus House is the long-running Wednesday Latin night. The evening is called Musica y Pasion Latina and includes a fabulous drag show hosted by Franceska, followed by DJ Ruben Casas spinning at 11 p.m. Franceska’s show is currently San Diego’s longest-running drag revue and has been a staple at Bacchus House since the bar opened in 2001. Franceska is hilarious and puts on an incredible show. It is an amazing Wednesday night out, and is always packed. Bacchus House is a great alternative to some of the other “hump day” options around town. I spent many Wednesday nights in North Park at Bacchus House until I got one of those pesky 8 a.m.-type jobs.
Friday and Sunday nights at Bacchus House also are Latin themed, and always a good time. Fridays are now Papacito San Diego and include the sexy Mango Dancers, drink specials, and two dance floors. Sundays are Fiesta Domingo, with Alenjandra hosting another fantastic drag revue, followed by DJ Ruben Casas at 11 p.m.
Last July, a ’90s-themed concept was brought into Bacchus House on Thursday nights. Andrew Roy, Chris Honeycutt, and Bacchus House host Psyche, which includes 90-cent cover, 90-cent drinks and, of course, the hottest music from the 1990s. It’s crazy to think that 1990s were so long ago that we can now “bring it back”! This is a really fun night and is modeled after the success of the ’80s night Manic Mondays at The Brass Rail Nightclub & Lounge. Each Thursday brings a nice-sized, attractive crowd in search of affordable booze and an escape back to the gay ’90s.
And Saturdays are a mixed, but fun bag at Bacchus House. On a rotating basis, Saturdays host the very popular Bearnight, Club ’80s, and Klub Therapy. Events that cater to the bear community and those who love them have become very popular at clubs across town. Bacchus House has definitely entered this market, and provides a great location for this event and the other rotating Saturday events. The club also hosts a number of special events, including the very popular Turn-A-Bout show where the bar staff dresses in drag and performs, followed by an amazing headline entertainer. In fact, for the last two years, Bacchus House has expanded out onto Ohio Street next to the bar, and it created a festival concert atmosphere where RuPaul headlined in 2007 and Taylor Dane appeared in 2008. The bar also has been host to countless charity events – it seems like almost every week I see some sort of show or benefit being hosted in the bar. Tens of thousands of dollars have been raised in or donated by Bacchus House to local charities. This bar is there for our community!
If you have not been to Bacchus House before, or if you have not been in awhile, go check it out! You will be impressed with the offerings and will definitely have a great time. For the full, weekly line-up or more information, visit www.bacchushouse.com. Bacchus House is located at 3054 University Ave. in North Park.
