All over the place!
Published Thursday, 16-Apr-2009 in issue 1112
I feel like I am in a daze. There is just so much going on around town. It’s all good stuff, but, with so many things happening, I couldn’t find a focus for this week’s column. So please excuse me in advance for being all over the place.
I am sure many of you are still in a daze from last weekend’s White Party. The event drew thousands of sexy men to Palm Springs. It was basically one of the biggest, most anticipated gay parties in the world. It seemed to empty all the men out of San Diego.
Unable to attend, I headed to one of my favorite Saturday night spots, The Brass Rail, but it was lacking one of my favorite things in the world: men. And you know what? It wasn’t so bad at all. While I hear that the lesbian world is filled with its own brand of drama, the gay drama factor was missing and I did not mind one bit.
For those who had too much fun at the White Party or are sexually active, it’s a good idea to keep up-to-date on your STD tests. With syphilis on the rise in San Diego, the “Sore Loser” campaign has been launched. The campaign includes a cool Web site with information about a number of free testing events at convenient locations across the county. Next week, my favorite two local bars, Bourbon Street and Bacchus House, will serve as testing sites. Syphilis and HIV testing will be offered at Bourbon Street tonight, Thursday, April 16 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. While you are there, be sure to try out Bourbon Street’s fabulous all-you-can-eat buffet. The same testing will be offered at Bacchus House on Wednesday, April 22, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Stick around for Bacchus House’s Musica y Pasion Latina party. The event includes a drag revue hosted by Franceska, followed by DJ Ruben Casas until closing. Bourbon St. is located at 4612 Park Blvd. in University Heights, and Bacchus House is located at 3054 University Ave. in North Park. For more information about syphilis, how to protect yourself and other testing locations, visit www.sdsoreloser.com.
For those who didn’t get their bodies pumped and ripped for Palm Springs, now is the time to hit the gym and get your body sexy for Pride season. It’s just around the corner. As I’ve said before, eat in moderation and stay physically active. Safe sex is a great workout, by the way. If you follow my advice, you will have a sexy body for Pride and all the summer pool parties. So hit the gym now.
And don’t forget Guerrilla Queer Bar (GQB), the fabulous monthly event where more than 100 “queers” take over a “straight” bar and “gay it up” for a night. So far, GQB organizers have hosted four takeovers, including The Sweetwater Saloon at Hard Rock Hotel, Firehouse in Pacific Beach, McGregor’s in Mission Valley and Shout House in Downtown. GQB wants to know which “straight” bar you would like GQB to take over next. GQB has a short survey on its Web site and gives people the opportunity to make suggestions for the next event. So let Nick and Carlos and all the GQB organizers know where you want to go. To fill out the survey and give your suggestions, visit http://sites.google.com/site/gqbsandiego/survey.
A good friend of mine, Regina Styles, one of San Diego’s finest drag entertainers and her “sister” Lexi Styles are hosting the 2009 Mr./Miss/.Ms. Gay San Diego Pageant this Sunday, April 19, at 6 p.m. at The Flame. The annual event will include casual- and formal-wear competitions, as well as a talent contest between the “Miss” contestants. Regina and Lexi always put on a good show, and The Flame is a great place to hang out. Cover is only $6 and benefits Project STAR. Contestants are still being sought. Contact Regina at 619-288-1183 if you are interested. The Flame is located at 3780 Park Blvd. in Hillcrest.
Finally, whether the economy has hit you hard or you blew your cash over the weekend, Rich’s is one of the best places to close out a Sunday night. It’s a “cheap” but hot place to be on Sunday nights. Rich’s, no cover before 11 p.m., has $3 beer specials and $5 drink specials. Rich’s has two rooms of fun with hip-hop in the front and house music on the back dance floor. Maybe I’ll see you there on Sunday night. Rich’s is located at 1051 University Ave. in Hillcrest.
In summary, play nice with the girls, get tested and play safe, hit the gym (Pride is coming), take over a “straight” bar, cheer on the next Mr., Miss and Ms. Gay San Diego, and don’t worry – Rich’s is cheap if you splurge on Friday and Saturday. Have fun and I’ll see you out and about.
