Dine Out, Fight AIDS!
Published Thursday, 23-Apr-2009 in issue 1113
In San Diego, Dining Out for Life® is an easy way to make a difference in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The difficult part about participating in this year’s event will be choosing where to go!
With 84 participating restaurants – in 17 San Diego area neighborhoods – the choices are plentiful, and a great excuse to gather some friends and head to that new place you’ve been meaning to try.
Everyone can participate in Dining Out for Life® by choosing from any of the participating locations for breakfast, lunch, coffee, dinner, drinks and/or dessert on Thursday, April 30, when at least 25 percent of all food and liquor sales will be donated to The San Diego LGBT Community Center’s HIV/AIDS services and prevention programs.
The official Dining Out for Life® San Diego Bar & Restaurant Guide is now available online at www.thecentersd.org, with participating locations broken down by neighborhood, making it even easier to plan your day of dining out!
You can spend the full day in North Park or Hillcrest, get your morning started with pancakes in Poway or Temecula, grab lunch in Chula Vista or dinner in the Gaslamp or East Village – the generous Dining Out establishments are all over San Diego County and include some of San Diego’s finest restaurants.
Volunteers and ambassadors key to success of Dining Out for Life
Now in its third year, The San Diego LGBT Community Center’s Dining Out for Life® event owes its success, in part, to the wonderful support of generous, energetic and fun-loving volunteers.
Dining Out for Life® volunteers give their time in many, one of the most important ways is serving as an “Ambassador” for one (or more) of the participating locations. Ambassadors invite everyone they know to dine at their location, during their shift, on Thursday, April 30. In addition to welcoming guests, Ambassadors serve a critical role in this important event by providing information about the need to support The Center’s HIV/AIDS services and prevention programs and encouraging diners to make an additional contribution to The Center’s efforts.
“Our volunteers and ambassadors have truly made a difference in the success of this event. Over the last two years, ambassadors have raised more than 30 percent of the event’s grand total simply by welcoming people to the event and inviting everyone to make an additional donation to The Center’s HIV/AIDS service and education programs. And, they’ve had a great time doing it,” said Donnie Luehring, The Center’s Dining Out For Life® event manager. “We still need friendly and outgoing people who want to be part of this incredible day to volunteer as ambassadors.”
There’s still time to get involved! If you would like to volunteer for Dining Out for Life®, please contact Jacqueline Palmer at 619-497-2920, ext. 107 or via e-mail at jpalmer@thecentersd.org.
All funds raised in San Diego will stay in San Diego, providing support for The Center’s range of HIV/AIDS services and prevention programs, which are woven into nearly every one of The Center’s programs, from Latino Services to Youth Services to Behavioral Health. The Center is often the first place people call to obtain accurate information about HIV/AIDS, and it is imperative that callers are able to access prevention education, as well as a full range of referrals and resources.
Great cause, great food
Some of San Diego’s hottest chefs will be participating in this year’s event, bring- ing their commitment to the fight against HIV/AIDS into the kitchen.
“One day, one meal, one goal. By banding together for Dining Out For Life®, chefs, restaurants and their customers nationwide are not only helping educate the public about HIV/AIDS, but are helping support those living with the disease,” said Robert Conaway, executive chef, Glass Door Restaurant & Lounge at the Porto Vista Hotel.
“We, as Chefs, nurture people by nature, feeding them as our chosen career path,” Conaway said. “And, as a chef, I have joined the greater San Diego community to help fight HIV/AIDS by becoming a part of the event. On April 30, not only will I be cooking, I’ll also be dining out … will you?”
“HIV/AIDS support nationwide seems to have fallen out of the spotlight. Now is the time to refocus on how this affects us locally, and what we can do to help. This disease doesn’t just ‘happen’ to nameless, faceless people we’ve never met – it touches our friends, neighbors and people we see every day,” said Richard Sweeney, a former “Top Chef” contestant and executive chef and Confidential Restaurant + Loft.
“We can’t sit idly by waiting for a cure, we have to be proactive and make something happen,” Sweeney said. “For the price of a meal, Dining Out for Life® helps San Diegans give back to their community in a way that keeps all funds raised here, local. We all have to do our part so, until there’s a cure, get me in the kitchen!”
A benefit to the entire community
Dining Out for Life® is a win-win-win proposition for our entire community. Local restaurants see increased business, participants feel good about contributing to a good and important cause and The Center’s HIV/AIDS services and prevention programs benefit.
“Dining Out For Life® is a great way to make a meaningful contribution to the fight against AIDS while also supporting the hardworking restaurant community right in your own backyard,” said Dining Out for Life® spokesperson Ted Allen.
Allen, an Emmy Award-winning television personality, gained fame as the food and wine connoisseur on Bravo’s hit TV series “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.” He is the host of the Food Network’s new hit series “Chopped” and appears on “Food Detectives.” Allen is also an occasional judge for Bravo’s “Top Chef” and Food Network’s “Iron Chef America” and hosted the PBS series “Uncorked: Wine Made Simple.” This is his second year serving as the Dining Out for Life® spokesperson.
Last year, an estimated 250,000 diners in more than 40 cities helped raise more than $3.9 million for their local HIV-AIDS service organizations. You can help further that success by dining out on Thursday, April 30.
