Profiles in passion
‘Passion’ is a wonderful word – and for the Pride award honorees we tracked down, it’s the reason they do what they do
Published Thursday, 29-Jul-2004 in issue 866
Tomorrow night, Pride will hand out their annual Pride Rally Awards. The recipients this year range from a transgender equality activist to a black lesbian grandmother in a biracial relationship; from a loving couple to an artist-activist; from a long-standing community publication to the heart — the pearl, actually — of the San Diego GLBT community, The Center.
Much will be shared about their work in politics, in families, in communities. The results of their efforts are clear: increasingly more GLBT members in political office, phenomenal fundraising records, a long list of meaningful resources for those with HIV/AIDS.
But what motivates these individuals and groups to spend so much of their time and their lives focused on making our lives easier? We sat down with the recipients and asked them to tell us in their own words where they were 30 years ago, where they think the GLBT community will be in another 30 years and what motivates them. And you may be very surprised. Of course, there are the usual suspects: Discrimination. Justice. Outrage. Fear. Indignation. And some not-so-usual suspects: Selfishness. Love of winning. The Mexican Revolution. Genetics. The Color Purple. And red and orange.
