On paper, Ed Schrock is the perfect right-wing Republican. The Christian Coalition loves him. The ACLU doesn’t. He supports constitutional amendments to ban same-sex marriage and prohibit flag burning. According to his official biography, Schrock and his wife are “active members of the Atlantic Shores Baptist Church” in Virginia Beach. Thus the 63-year-old, two-term Virginia Congress member stunned the Washington political establishment Aug. 30 when he abruptly announced that he wouldn’t seek a third term.

“After much thought and prayer,” he said in a written statement, “I have come to the realization that these allegations will not allow my campaign to focus on the real issues facing our nation and region. Therefore, as of today, I am stepping aside and will no longer be the Republican nominee for Congress from Virginia’s Second Congressional District.”

“These allegations” include an audiotape of one of the Congress member’s purported calls to a gay phone-sex line. You see, Ed Schrock is Michael Rogers’ biggest catch yet in his campaign to out hypocritical gay Republicans. Go to his Blogactive.com website and you can hear the following recording, which Rogers claims is the Congress member’s ad on the sex line:

“I’m just lookin’ to get together with a white guy who’s got a great body on him and a good-sized endowment that’s cut… this must be incredibly discreet – I can’t overemphasize that.”

We don’t know whether Schrock found his man or not, but he certainly didn’t do it discreetly. One thing is clear, however: Michael Rogers sure got his man.
