City Commissioner Abrams to be honored at GLBT Community Tribute Banquet
Community leader celebrated for 20 years of activism, philanthropy
Published Thursday, 15-Jun-2006 in issue 964
Progressive philanthropy: the term Bruce M. Abrams, Esq., uses to describe how he views charitable giving.
Not only has Abrams lent his home to numerous charity fund-raisers and donated substantial sums of money to community organizations, scholarship funds and other causes, he has a strong belief in using his philanthropic efforts to persuade others to donate and get involved. That is progressive philanthropy.
On Sunday, June 25, Abrams will be honored at the ninth GLBT Community Tribute Banquet. Congressmember Bob Filner and his wife, Jane, will serve as the honorary chairs and hosts of this annual event.
Throughout his 20 years of activism, Abrams has used his education and influence to promote positive change and garner needed funds for the community. His resume of volunteer service includes a long list of current and past board memberships, including the San Diego Democratic Club, Diversionary Theatre, San Diego Foundation for Change, Equality California and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Since last year, Abrams has served as a city commissioner on San Diego’s Human Relations Commission.
The Bruce M. Abrams Lending Library at The Center is a direct result of his progressive philanthropy. Abrams donated a sum of money to get this community resource started, and he also hosted an event at his home to sign on more donors – he wanted to make sure that this resource would have a group of supporters who would be able to keep the library going throughout the years. Today, the library houses over 2,000 volumes.
Commissioner Abrams stated that receiving the GLBT Community Tribute this year is “humbling” but a “wonderful honor.” He is excited that many friends and community leaders will be present to celebrate with him, but hopes they aren’t disappointed when they find out he’s the only individual being honored at this event.
Abrams frequently uses his home for the benefit of the GLBT community. Numerous political receptions, charity benefits and galas are held there and large sums of money have been raised as a result, but Abrams emphasizes the importance of getting people involved. At the banquet, Abrams plans to give a speech that will spark people to get involved and give back to the community.
City Commissioner Nicole Murray-Ramirez has labeled Abrams “a longtime gay activist, philanthropist and community mover and shaker.”
“It’s all about education,” Abrams said. “I was taught that the only difference is education.”
He uses his education to advocate, encourage and inspire. In the end, Abrams just wants to try to make society better for everyone, he said.
The ninth annual GLBT Community Tribute Banquet will take place June 25 aboard the William D. Evans ship at the Bahia Resort Hotel on Mission Bay. Tickets are $85 and seating is limited. To RSVP, call (619) 794-2777 or (619) 692-1967.
