Portrait of a Community
Published Thursday, 13-Sep-2007 in issue 1029
Name: Katie Pender
Age: 39
Self definition: A counter-culture woman who will always rage against the machine when I believe it is wrong.
Where were you at 9 a.m. last Sunday morning? Playing in a softball tournament
What person has influenced you more than any other, and how? My mom. She taught me so much about life. One of the biggest was the value of money and working hard for what you want. When I was growing up she told me that if I really wanted something I would have to work and save up for half and she would pay the other half. That taught me how to earn things while still putting them in reach.
When don’t you feel equal? When I realize the rights that my wife and I don’t have because we can’t be legally married.
Where were you last Wednesday at noon? At work
When was the last time you felt proud? In my job when I help a child learn something new and they take a big step forward, I feel very proud.
If there was a defining moment in your life, what was it? The loss of my mom. I’m still not sure how that has defined me but I know that I will never be the same.
Where were you at 10 p.m. last Friday? The Diversionary, for a very funny play
What is your most immediate goal? To get pregnant and have a healthy baby
When do you feel total joy? When I am skiing down a beautiful mountain at high speed feeling the wind rush by and feeling totally free.
