Portrait of a Community
Published Thursday, 14-Aug-2008 in issue 1077
Name: Toni Robin
Age: 49, truly
Self definition: Owner, TR/PR Public Relations and Marketing; a Southern California beach girl who is true to her East Coast roots; a theater, dance and art lover who can’t act, leap or draw – “Those who can’t, promote!”
Where were you at 9 a.m. last Sunday morning?
Riding my bike to yoga in Bird Rock
What person has influenced you more than any other, and how?
Growing up, I thought New York politician and activist Bella Abzug was the brightest and most flamboyant character I had ever seen. I learned from her, and from my mother, that women can be strong, speak their minds … and get on the TV news. Also, my Grandma May, who taught me to love the beach and to stand up straight.
When don’t you feel equal?
In my life, I’ve been lucky to have been treated fairly, but I see inequality all around me. When a friend’s partner cannot get U.S. citizenship or a loving couple cannot get married, it affects all of us.
Where were you last Wednesday at noon?
At Dance Place at NTC watching a rehearsal for Trolley Dances
When was the last time you felt proud?
I feel proud when I hear of someone who has been moved, inspired, or touched by an arts performance I encouraged them to attend – especially children.
If there was a defining moment in your life, what was it?
I lost my father right before I graduated college and he was only 47. I vowed then to try and not put things off for the future. You never know …
Where were you at 10 p.m. last Friday night?
Watching a taped episode of “Weeds,” thinking about all the people who are just going out
What is your most immediate goal?
To stay healthy, enjoy my friends and family and continue promoting San Diego organizations to assure their visions are realized, and San Diego fulfills its potential to become a true cultural Mecca.
When do you feel total joy?
Swimming in the ocean first thing in the morning or right at sunset
