Beat Box holiday favorites
Published Thursday, 27-Nov-2008 in issue 1092
Who’s merrier than a bunch of elves in the North Pole? The boys tingling their jingles on our nation’s gay dance floors, of course. They have a lot to be cheerful about with new offerings from some of the worlds best DJs and dance artists. Here’s a selection of the best new dance albums coming to stores this holiday.
Hey Mr. Christmas
Kristine W
(Fly Again)
Kristine W knocks the holiday stockings off the chimney with her brand new collection of Christmas favorites including a remake of Dolly Parton’s “Hard Candy Christmas” and an electro mix of “Mary Did You Know.” Kristine introduces two new holiday songs in the album, self penned with the UK’s songwriting and production team, Love to Infinity. She also introduces a slick electro lounge vibe to The Sound of Music classic, “Favorite Things.” Of course, what would a diva holiday album be without “O Holy Night”? Kristine does not disappoint with an anthem-y rendition of the holiday favorite that will have even the big man in red shaking his bowl full of jelly.
A Dirty Gay Christmas
Jonny McGovern
(Gay Nerd)
Who knew Christmas could be so scandalous? Leave it to Jonny “The Gay Pimp” McGovern to find a way to turn a holy holiday into well, a “hole-y holiday.” In this latest high energy faggoty track, Jonny hilariously adds North Pole flavor to the already fabulous fairy land of East Village, NYC. All of your favorite Christmas characters are featured in the new track – Frosty, Rudolph, Jack Frost – but doing naughty gay things that you might not usually expect from the trio. The lyrics are fun, but it’s the beat that rules on this one.
Joyful Sound
Debby Holiday
(Nebula 9 Records)
Debby Holiday’s latest project, Joyful Sound resonates of ’90s divas and modern sounds. Featured in this season’s hit LOGO show “Sordid Lives: The Series,” these are the dance remixes of the club hit by some of the dance industries best talents: DJ Scotty K., Tracy Young, Wayne G & Porl Young, Hex Hector and Jake Benson. Holiday has been a staple in the dance scene since her 2004 hit, Dive. Joyful Sound is as the name implies – a complete delight that proves this rock diva is here to stay.
New York Club Anthems Volume 3
Mixed by Hector Fonseca
(Star 69)
OK, so this isn’t really a holiday album – but it should be in the stocking of every true dance fan this holiday! If any DJ understands the pulse of nightlife, it is Hector Fonseca. The new album captures Fonseca’s fashionable vibe and packages it into this season’s must-have dance album. Several divas that were featured on the first two albums - including Suzanne Palmer, Maya, and Kim Cooper – appear again in the latest album. Standouts on the album include Laura Kidd’s “Automatic”; a huge dance floor hit this summer, first in New York City and then throughout the world, and Mikel Curcio’s “In Your Head”; a simpler, chicer sound influenced by the early days of NYC. Another hand-raiser is Deborah Cooper’s, “Do It Properly,” a dance floor classic that Fonseca breathes new, exciting life into.
