Community Service Award: Linda Childers
Published Thursday, 28-Jul-2005 in issue 918
Linda Childers has been a frontline GLBT activist for more than 10 years.
When her youngest son came out to her, Childers felt compelled to combine her presidency at the local Parent Teacher Association with a myriad of fund-raising activities within the GLBT community.
She has a long-standing involvement with the Imperial Court de San Diego, a social and community organization that holds fund-raisers, builds relationships with local businesses and organizations, and aims to assist community members in need. Childers rose through the ranks to become chair of the Imperial Court de San Diego’s board. In this capacity, Childers helped raise numerous funds for AIDS and cancer organizations.
She is also co-founder of the hugely popular GLBT Community Children’s Easter Egg hunt held at Trolley Barn Park in University Heights, which drew more than 300 participants this year. She is a former chair of the Toni Atkins Lesbian Health Fund, which accesses health care for low-income or uninsured lesbian and bisexual women.
