The month of March marked the third year that the United States has been at war with Iraq. Being a war veteran myself, I do not support the war that the United States is presently involved in, nor do I agree with the decisions that President Bush has made. When an innocent life is lost, it becomes a tragedy for those who loved that individual.

War is ugly. Those who are presently in the military have volunteered to do a job that many would not even think of getting involved in. A service member knows that there are rules and dangers when they sign up. It’s like being a police officer – there are dangers and rules in that profession as well. Because they are endangering their lives, it is important that you support those in the military, especially when they come back home.

The Latino Film Festival last month was fantastic. Many Latino actors, producers and directors were present, and many of you who attended had the opportunity to meet them. Several of the films in this year’s festival were excellent. For the fist time in its history, the festival presented a track of gay movies.

I did see many members of our gay Latino community attending different features and the gala parties, and something spectacular happened at the closing-night gala. It is standard to see women dancing together at Latino celebrations, but during the closing-night gala, there were also male couples dancing on the main dance floor. It was wonderful to see them enjoy themselves like a big family. You might want to make plans to attend next year’s Latino Film Festival and, yes, dance with your special someone surrounded by other Latino film aficionados.

An event that was important to those in the Latino community was Cesar Chavez Day celebrations and the annual breakfast at the San Diego Convention Center, where Paul Chavez, the middle son of Cesar Chaves, and his family were the guests of honor. More than 1,200 people attended the event, including many of our elected officials and community members. City Commissioner Todd Gloria and representatives from The Center, San Diego LGBT Pride and the San Diego Democratic Club also attended. Thank you for getting up so early for the event.

Also well attended was the Cesar Chavez Memorial March on April 1, where Mario Valencia performed. Great voice. Thank you, Mario. (He has a new CD out. Contact me for more information.) This year’s march was a bit different than it has been in years past. Several of the community leaders who participated took their annual pilgrimage to the barrio, but some of them marched and left without making time to enjoy the neighborhood celebration, or to mingle and meet some of the people who voted for them. Perhaps they forgot the Latino vote and the support that got them where they are now. Sadly, others took the opportunity to promote themselves for the upcoming elections – seeking the Latino vote. We will see if they come back to the barrio once the election season is over. Those in a leadership position should not forget everyday people, and it is obvious that some leaders have become unapproachable. Therefore, I am asking these community leaders to talk to people even if they do not benefit from the conversation or the relationship.

Many do not know that Barrio Logan has a long history. Some of the families that live there have been in there for generations, and they truly hold onto their roots and traditions. Chicano Perk is a very popular place, and many people in the gay community go there. In addition, there are many art galleries in Barrio Logan that display local neighborhood artists. Delia’s is a gay-friendly taco shop that participated in Latin Pride. It is located right in front of Chicano Perk.

San Diego LGBT Pride is looking for community members from different Latino South American countries to bring their ideas and/or be part of a committee to plan a more inclusive Latino area during the upcoming San Diego Pride weekend, taking place during the last weekend in July. Education is important, and you should attend school if you can. The Latino of the month is attorney Pablo C. Palomino, who demonstrates that with dedication, hard work and long hours of studying, one can be successful. He is one of the youngest attorneys in San Diego. The Mexican-American community is proud of who he is and what he has become. Congratulations, Pablo, and good luck in the future.

April 9: Ballet Folklórico en Aztlan will be performing dances from Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula at the Centro Cultural de la Raza. The free event begins at 2:00 p.m.

Hola. Marzo, el mes pasado, fue el tercer aniversario que los Estados Unidos Americanos a estado involucrado en la guerra de Irak. Yo, como veterano de guerra, no apoyo el conflicto en que estamos involucrados ni tampoco estoy de acuerdo con la decisión que el presidente Bush hizo. Cuando la vida de una persona inocente se pierde es una tragedia que afecta a las personas que estiman a la víctima. la guerra es terrible y las personas que son miembros de la fuerza militar se han inscrito voluntariamente.

Ya no hay (draft) participación militar obligatoria, y es por ellos que tu no te tienes preocupación de que seas obligado a participar. Una persona que se inscribe voluntariamente esta enterado/a de las reglas y peligró que esto conlleva. Cuando nos ponemos el uniforme militares muy parecido a la profesión de policía, hay peligro de que puedes perder tu vida. Es por eso que es importante que apoyes a los héroes de las fuerza militar especialmente cuando regresan a casa del servicio.

Marzo fue un mes muy ocupado, se presento el Latino Film Festival (Festival de Películas Latinas). Durante el festival miré varios miembros de nuestra comunidad. Tuve la oportunidad de concurrir a varios eventos incluyendo unos eventos de gala donde tuve la oportunidad de conocer varios directores de películas, y ver varias películas que estuvieron fantásticas e interesantes. Productores de películas, escritores, actores y actrices estuvieron presentes para saludar al público. Este año, por primera ves, películas de tema gay fueron incluidas en el festival. También este año dúrate las celebración de gala final una cosa sensacional pasó. Todos los Latino estamos acostumbrado a mirar a mujeres bailando juntas en eventos Latino formales, pero esta vez como siempre había parejas del mismo sexo bailando mero esta vez incluyó parejas de hombres en la pista y nadie los molestó. Fue maravilloso. Así que hagan planes para el próximo año.

El evento que se celebro el mes pasado fue la celebración de Cesar Chávez primero fue el desayuno en el Centro de Convenciones en San Diego donde mas de 1,200 personas asistieron, donde Paul Chavez el hijo de Cesar Chávez y su familia fueron los invitados de honor. Varios líderes de la comunidad y oficiales de la Cuidad fueron parte del publico que también incluyo miembros de la comunidad, representante del Center, San Diego LGBT Pride, el City Commissioner Todd Gloria y muchos más personas de nuestra comunidad asistieron y escucharon a el grupo Mariachi Juvenil. Otro evento que se celebró fue la marcha en honor a Cesar Chávez. Miembros Políticos de la comunidad participaron y varios hicieron su peregrinación del año hacia ara el Barrio Logan. Lamentablemente se fueron inmediatamente sin tomar el tiempo de participar en la celebración o hablar y conocer la comunidad Latina que en varios casos fue el voto Latino que otorgó se puesto actual. Lo único que yo puedo decir es que unas personas se han echo muy difícil para poder hablar con ellos y otros tomaron la oportunidad de promoverse personalmente y políticamente. Es por eso que aconsejo a las ciertas personas que se bajen de las naves y platiquen con la comunidad.

Barrio Logan tiene mucha historia y la mayoría se las familias mantienen las tradiciones y raíces familiares. En Bario Logan además de historia se encuentran varia galerías de arte, y un café que los dueños son gay (Chicano Perk). Se a echo muy popular no nomás con los residentes que viven en Barrio Lagan y también para grupos que usan el lugar para reuniones. El mes de Abril va a estar muy ocupado pues para habrá muchos eventos que incluye.
