El mes de Octubre es el mes que empieza a oscurecer más temprano y la temperatura baja y nos preparamos para el invierno. Es también la temporada en donde empezamos a reflexionar de nuestra mortalidad y en las personas que se nos han ido. ¿Claro que el día de las brujas es un día divertido y nos gusta disfrazarnos, pero cuantos de nosotros nos ponemos a reflexionar en El Día de los Muertos? El Día de los Muertos es una tradición Mexicana para recordar a nuestros seres queridos que han fallecido. Esta tradición se origino en los tiempos de los Aztecas en donde recordaban y celebraban la memoria del ser querido. La creencia es que el Alma de la persona regresa a visitar y a celebrar con los vivos. Las familias celebran este día con ir al cementerio y construir altares en sus hogares para aquellos que han muerto. La cultura Americana ve la muerte como algo triste y morboso, nosotros los Latinos lo vemos como una celebración de vida después de la muerte. Con El Día de los Muertos celebramos vida y aceptación de la muerte en lugar de tenerle miedo. ¡Feliz Día de los Muertos y feliz Halloween!

October is the time of the year when the sun goes down earlier, it starts to get cold and we begin to prepare for the winter ahead. It is also the time of the year we begin to think about our own mortality and those who have gone before us. Halloween is fun, and a lot of us like to dress up, but how many of us take the time to reflect on Dia de los Muertos? Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a traditional Mexican holiday honoring those who have passed on. It originated with the Aztecs and was seen as a time of remembering and rejoicing. During this time it is believed that the spirits of loved ones return to earth to celebrate and rejoice with the living. Families celebrate by visiting graveyards and by building community or home altars to honor the dead. What American culture may portray as a morbid tradition, Latinos regard as a celebration of life after death. Dia de los Muertos teaches us to accept death rather than fear it, and to enjoy life, because it’s a short pathway from one to another. Happy Halloween y Feliz Dia de los Muertos!

La semana pasada el alcalde Jerry Sanders de San Diego y el concilio de San Diego firmaron una resolución municipal apoyando los matrimonios del mismo sexo. Cinco miembros del concilio votaron a favor de la resolución entre ellos Ben Hueso del distrito 8. Queremos darles las gracias a todos los que votaron a favor y en especial a nuestro amigo Ben Hueso. Les pedimos que le manden un mensaje personal de agradecimiento por su apoyo en benhueso@sandiego.gov.

Last week Mayor Jerry Sanders signed a City Council resolution supporting a legal fight to overturn California’s ban on same-sex marriage. Mayor Sanders said that he would veto the City Council’s vote in favor of the resolution, but then changed his mind. Since then, the mayor and councilmembers, like Ben Hueso from District 8, who voted in favor of the resolution, have been contacted by people who strongly disagree with the resolution. We want to publicly thank Mayor Sanders and our friend, Councilmember Hueso for their support and would like for you to do so too.

¿Como vas a celebrar Halloween? Alista tu disfraz y ven a Nightmare on Normal Street. Nightmare on Normal Street es un fiesta comunitaria que recauda fondos para el Hillcrest Youth Center. Este evento para personas de 21 o mayor tendrá la oportunidad de disfrutar la musica de DJ Talonya y de participar en concurso con de disfraz presentado por Nicole, donde podrías ganar $1000. Este evento se lleva acabo el 27 de Octubre, de 7-10 p.m., en la calle Normal, donde cruza la avenida University.

How do you plan to celebrate Halloween this year? Get your costume ready and come to Nightmare on Normal Street. Nightmare on Normal Street is a unique community block party that raises funds to support the Hillcrest Youth Center. This event, for those 21 years and older, will feature music by DJ Talonya, and, most importantly, Hillcrest’s best costume contest, where contestants can win more than $1,000 in prizes. A $5 admission allows participants to enjoy all the music, food and fun. The event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 7-10 p.m., near The Center on Normal Street, between University Avenue and Blaine Street.

Alberto Cortés el director ejecutivo de Mama’s Kitchen tiene mas de 17 años de experiencia en administración en servicios de VIH y SIDA. En Septiembre de 2005 fue premiado uno de 15 premios Local Hero of the Year Award patrocinad por Union Bank de California. También esta en la comité consejera par los Servicios Latinos del Center. Su dedicación a la comunidad GLBT latina, y en particular para las personas viviendo con VIH y SIDA ha sido increíble. ¡Muchísimas gracias por todo lo que haces Alberto!

Alberto Cortés, the executive director of Mama’s Kitchen, has had more than 17 years management experience in HIV/AIDS services with nonprofit organizations. In September 2005, he was awarded one of 15 Central and Southern California Local Hero of the Year Awards from Union Bank of California. Alberto is also a member of the Board of Latino Services. His commitment to the GLBT Latino community and in particular to those living with HIV/AIDS has been amazing. Thank you Alberto for all your hard work!
