Today is a great day to be a Californian! Congratulations to all the happy couples getting married and to those who will be getting married soon.

A few years ago, this would not have been possible. In 2000 Californians voted on the Knight Initiative, a divisive ballot measure, also known as the Defense of Marriage Act. However, rather than defending marriage this initiative made it against the law for GLBT couples to get married. Earlier this year the California Supreme Court struck down this discriminatory marriage law. This historic decision is a huge victory for all Californians who believe in fairness and equality. Now the conservatives are trying to change that. There will be an initiative to pass a California constitutional amendment to ban marriage for same-sex couples in California on the November ballot.

Twenty-seven U.S. states have passed constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriage. California and Massachusetts are the only states to approve same-sex marriage. The upcoming ballot initiative attempts to amend the California constitution to only recognize marriages “between a man and a woman.” Many same-sex couples are planning to exchange vows before the election in November. If the amendment passes, same-sex marriages would most likely end, but most legal experts believe those already approved would stand. This is why it is very important for as many of us as possible to register to vote, and vote against the ban on marriage. Remember that those who get married in California will only be recognized at the state level and not the federal level. That fight will happen sometime in the future.

Another reason to register early for the November elections is because of the presidential race. This is the first time in history that a black man has made it this far in the process, and this could mean significant changes for all of us. A new report called Fear & Loathing in Prime Time: Immigration Myths and Cable News written by Media Matters Action Network documents all the negativity surrounding immigration that is heard on cable news. When it comes to this issue, cable news overflows with a series of myths that feed viewers’ resentment and fears, seemingly geared toward creating anti-immigrant hysteria. The report talks about two types of myths regarding Latino immigrants. The first type is the large and most common myths, about crime and undocumented immigrants, and the costs of illegal immigration in social services and taxes. The second type of myth is that there is a conspiracy to take back the Southwest United States for Mexico; that Mexican immigrants are infecting Americans with leprosy; and that undocumented immigrants are responsible for a wave of election fraud.

The report focuses on three cable commentators: Lou Dobbs, Bill O’Reilly and Glenn Beck because they are the most notable for a number of reasons. On their news shows, Dobbs, O’Reilly and Beck continue to create fear, anger and resentment on the topic of illegal immigration. Of the three commentators, Dobbs is the one most obsessed with the topic. 70 percent of the 2007 episodes of the CNN program “Lou Dobbs Tonight” contained discussion of illegal immigration. The Hispanic Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit group, last week launched a national boycott of CNN, the cable news channel, to highlight these continuing attacks against Latino immigrants by Dobbs. We support the Hispanic Institutes boycott and ask that you do too.

Latino Services at the San Diego LGBT Community Center will celebrate Frida Kahlo’s 101 birthday with the second annual Happy Birthday Frida: Life! Art! & Tequila! The event will take place on Saturday, June 28, from 6-10 p.m. Celebrate the life of this legendary artist while enjoying: Live bands and traditional dance performances, a Frida Kahlo look-a-like contest, great food, beer and tequila, along with multiple Latino(a) art exhibits. Apenas a empezado la lucha

Saludos mi gente! Hoy es un dia para ser un residente del gran estado de California. Felicidades a todas las parejas GLBT que finalmente han podido conseguir casarse y a los que conseguirán casarse pronto. Después de muchos años de lucha, el martes 17 de junio de 2008 será el día histórico en que las parejas GLBT finalmente pudieron casarse legalmente en California. En San Diego, se esperaba que más de 200 parejas se apuntaran para recibir una licencia de matrimonio y se casaran el martes.

Hace algunos años, esto no habría sido posible. En 2000 Californianos votaron sobre la iniciativa Knight, una medida conocida como la Defensa del Matrimonio. Sin embargo, esta iniciativa hizo lo contrario y negó que las parejas GLBT consigan casarse. A principios de este año el Tribunal Supremo de California cambio esta ley discriminatoria. Esta decisión histórica es una victoria enorme para todos los Californianos que crean en la imparcialidad y la igualdad. Ahora los conservadores están intentando cambiar eso. Otra vez están han introducido un iniciativa para enmendar la constitución de California para que no se puedan casar las parejas GLTB. Veintisiete estados de los E.E.U.U. han pasado enmiendas constitucionales que prohiben matrimonio homosexual, y solamente California y de Massachussets lo han aprobado. Esta nueva iniciativa trata de enmendar la constitución de California para reconocer que el matrimonio solamente se puede definir como una unión entre un hombre y una mujer.”

Muchas parejas GLBT están planeando casarse antes de la elección en noviembre porque si la enmienda pasa, los matrimonios homosexuales terminaran muy probablemente, pero la mayoría de los expertos creen que esos ya aprobados no serán afectados. Esta es la razón por la cual es muy importante que nos registremos para votar, y de votar contra esta iniciativa. Recuérdense que solamente se reconocerá el matrimonio en el nivel estatal y no al nivel federal. Esa lucha sucederá alguna vez en el futuro.

Otra razón para registrarse para las elecciones de noviembre está debido a la elección presidencial. Esta es la primera vez en la historia que un hombre de color ha conseguido llegar tan lejos en este proceso, y esto podría significar cambios significativos para nosotros.
